TALLAHASSEE -- Florida State running back Jeff Chaney is out for the season with a torn ACL and a torn MCL in his right knee an MRI exam revealed Monday. The senior is expected to have reconstructive knee surgery within the next few weeks.

"It's terrible," coach Bobby Bowden said. "It's his last year. I sure hate it."

Chaney, who has 365 yards rushing and three touchdowns as the second-team tailback, sustained the injury in Saturday's 35-6 victory against Wake Forest. He will require 6-8 months of rehabilitation.

Third-team tailback Davy Ford also will miss the rest of the season with a broken collarbone.

RUNNING BACK WOES: Starting running back Travis Minor (left sprained ankle) and backup Greg Jones (sprained right ankle) spent the day working on exercise bicycles. Neither player was able to practice.

Minor and Jones are expected to play Saturday when the No. 3 Seminoles host No. 4 Florida.

Sophomore Nick Maddox has moved from wide receiver to running back to add depth to the battered running game. Maddox asked coaches during the off-season to switch him from tailback to wide receiver in order to get more playing time.

BUDDIES: Ever since Steve Spurrier publicly charged FSU coaches with teaching their players to hit the quarterback late, people have figured Spurrier and Bowden's relationship has been strained.

Not so, Bowden insists.

"Surprisingly, it's good. People would think, oh, they can't stand each other. That's not true. When I'm around him, I enjoy him. Forgive me, Lord," Bowden said, clasping his hands together and bowing his head.

"No, I do. I do enjoy him. I'm fascinated by him. I'm fascinated by the way he coaches. I respect the way he coaches and what he gets done."

60 FOR BOWDEN: Bowden and the FSU program will be a segment tonight on CBS' 60 Minutes II. "He's a legend because he's had long enough on the playing field to be tested by a tougher standard: wins and losses," CBS interviewer Charlie Rose said. The show airs on Ch. 10.

WEINKE RELAXES: Quarterback Chris Weinke sat out practice in order to rest his sore left foot. Weinke is scheduled to participate in today's two-hour practice.

CODY HONORED: Cornerback Tay Cody was named ACC defensive back of the week after recording six tackles and an interception in Saturday's game.

UF linebacker Davis set to return

GAINESVILLE -- Florida linebacker Andra Davis may be able to return sooner than expected.

The senior who injured his knee om the first game of the season was expected to be out for the rest of the season. However, Davis said Monday that he may be able to return as soon as the Florida State game on Saturday.

"I know I am (going to play on Saturday)," Davis said. "If it is God's will."

Although he is listed as doubtful on the trainer's report, Davis dressed in full pads for practice Monday and participated in drills.

Davis said he has been running for about a week and is ready to play.

Davis began the season as the starting middle linebacker but was replaced after he had surgery on his left knee. Redshirt freshman Matt Farrior, freshman Travis Harris and junior Travis Carroll have filled in.

GAFFNEY HONORED: Freshman wide receiver Jabar Gaffney was named Southeastern Conference offensive player of the week for his performance in the Gators' 41-21 victory Saturday against South Carolina. Gaffney set an NCAA freshman record for receiving touchdowns (13)in a season. He had seven receptions for 168 yards in the game.

TV TIMES: Ch. 28 will televise the Florida-Florida State game beginning at 8 p.m. Ch.28 also will televise the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 2 beginning at 4:30.

INJURY UPDATE: Guard Tommy Moody (left ankle) is questionable and guard Tommy Hillard (concussion) is doubtful.
