Slay to get his gold on live TV

He didn't get to hear his national anthem in Sydney, but wrestler Brandon Slay will get an Olympic presentation like no other.

The freestyle wrestler will receive his gold medal Wednesday on the Today show, outside NBC's studios at Rockefeller Center.

Slay initially won silver but was elevated to gold after Germany's Alexander Leipold tested positive for a banned substance.

TENNIS: Kim Clijsters, who got in the Chase Championships when five higher-ranked players withdrew with injuries, defeated No. 5 seed Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario 7-5, 6-4. Conchita Martinez defeated Elena Likhovtseva 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. The season-ending tournament, a mainstay at New York's Madison Square Garden since 1979, will move to Munich, Germany, next year. ... Michael Chang beat French wild card Arnaud Di Pasquale in the first round of the Paris Masters. ... Marat Safin took No. 1 in the ATP Champions Race, passing Gustavo Kuerten. ... The Tallahassee Women's Satellite/USTA Classic will be Jan. 7-Jan. 14 at Florida State.

COLLEGES: Eckerd placed Cady Dolan and Jane Byers on the all-Sunshine State Conference women's soccer first team and Johanna Wiborg, Monica Carrasco and Stephanie Schwobe on the second team. ... USF outside hitter Michelle Collier was named Conference USA volleyball player of the week. ... Florida's Kristina Bova, Tamara Roxworth, Nicole Hartley, Jerilyn Hattendorf, Candice McCray and Heather Wright were among 76 players named to the SEC volleyball academic honor roll. ... Tampa hosts the NCAA Division II South Region volleyball at the Bob Martinez Sports Center. Thursday, Armstrong Atlantic (Ga.) plays South Carolina-Spartanburg at 5:30 p.m. and Barry faces Florida Southern at 8. Friday, North Florida faces the winner of the first match at 5:30 and Tampa faces the late winner at 8. The final is at 6 Saturday.

AWARDS: Lee Perkinson, a former racing driver who competed in the St. Petersburg Grand Prix and works as an actor and ESPN motorsports reporter, was honored by the Florida Motion Picture&Television Association at its Crystal Reel Awards banquet Saturday in Tampa. He earned Best Lead Actor for his role in The Whole Town Is Sleeping.

SAILING: The Sunfish Class world championships opened with two races on Sarasota Bay with 104 racers from 12 states, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and a dozen foreign countries. Leading the four-day regatta was Don Martinborough of the Bahamas, then Oskar Johansson of Canada. The top local sailor was defending North American Sunfish champion Jeff Linton of Tampa, who was fifth in light to moderate wind conditions. Racing continues through Wednesday with the fleet scheduled to skip Thursday. The final races will be Friday. The event is on Sarasota Bay, north of New Pass.

SKIING: The Colorado Supreme Court overturned a lower court decision and gave the go-ahead for prosecutors to charge Nathan Hall with manslaughter. Prosecutors allege Hall was skiing out of control when he hit Alan Cobb, killing him almost instantly on April 20, 1997.

SOCCER: FIFA president Sepp Blatter and UEFA counterpart Lennart Johansson spoke with Prime Minister Tony Blair in the latest move to win support in the dispute about player transfers. The European Commission opposes the existing system, contending it does not allow free trade. ... Romario injured his left thigh in practice and will miss Brazil's World Cup qualifier against Colombia on Wednesday.

STADIA: The mayor of Philadelphia abandoned plans to build a downtown stadium for the Phillies and instead backed a less contentious site. Mayor John Street's decision to back a park in Chinatown had been criticized by neighbors and lawmakers.

ARENA FOOTBALL: The Tampa Bay Storm signed quarterback John Kaleo to a multi-year contract. Kaleo was the Storm MVP last season, taking over after an 0-3 start and guiding the team to a 9-3 finish. The seven-year veteran also has played with New England, San Jose, Anaheim, St. Louis, Cleveland and Albany. He is No. 8 on the league's all-time passing list.

GOLF: The PGA of America named Jack Connelly its president. He succeeds Will Mann, who will serve on the PGA Board as honorary president.

BOXING: World Boxing Council middleweight champion Keith Holmes sued Don King Productions Inc. in U.S. District Court, alleging the promoter didn't set up enough fights for him.
