Deputies search for man in attempted carjacking

WESLEY CHAPEL -- A 40-year-old Mississippi man got a scare Monday when a man tried to carjack his truck outside the Texaco station at 28009 State Road 54.

Joseph Leo MaGivern of Gulfport, Miss., told sheriff's deputies that he was pumping gas about 11 p.m. at the station when a man approached him and asked for 50 cents.

When MaGivern said he didn't have 50 cents, the man pulled a 9mm handgun and demanded the keys to his truck. MaGivern told deputies he ran inside the store and told the clerk to call police. The man ran east in front of the nearby Winner's Sports Grill, reports stated.

MaGivern described the assailant as a slender black man about 6 feet tall wearing a blue jacket, baggy blue jeans and a black beanie hat.

Authorities had made no arrests as of Tuesday night.

Man scratched initials on car in lot, deputies say

WESLEY CHAPEL -- A 27-year-old Lutz man was arrested Monday after authorities accused him of scratching his initials on the side of a 2002 Ford Mustang at a car lot.

Workers at Heritage Ford, 28739 State Road 54, called police Monday evening complaining that Aurelio Mattiello of 24119 Hampton Place would not leave the dealership after it had closed.

According to reports, Mattiello told sheriff's deputies that he had scratched his initials on the yellow Mustang because "it was the car of my dreams and I can't afford it."

Mattiello faces charges of criminal mischief.

He was taken to the county jail in Land O'Lakes, where he remained Tuesday in lieu of $350 bail.

Man injured in three-car wreck on U.S. 19

NEW PORT RICHEY -- A 76-year-old man was injured Tuesday afternoon in a three-car accident on U.S. 19, police said.

Charles Henry Wolf of New Port Richey was crossing the busy road from west to east on South Road about 12:45 p.m., said Sgt. John Volpe of the city police.

His 2000 Toyota collided with a northbound Isuzu driven by Vicky Ann Cavanno of Bayonet Point, Volpe said. One of their vehicles hit a car stopped in the southbound lanes.

Wolf was the only person injured in the crash.

He was flown to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, where he was in fair condition, a hospital spokesperson said.

Deputies: 13 suspensions didn't stop reckless driver

HOLIDAY -- A driver who Pasco deputies say ran two Sheriff's Office cruisers off the road was arrested early Tuesday after a 90 mph chase.

Allen Lee Gubbini, 29, of 1903 Kepner Drive faces charges of fleeing to elude, driving with a suspended license, reckless driving, resisting arrest without violence, not having a registration, unlawful use of a temporary tag, two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of marijuana, violation of his probation for battery, driving on a suspended license, possession of marijuana and leaving the scene of an accident, according to his arrest reports.

His license has been suspended 13 times, deputies said.

A deputy initially tried to stop Gubbini about 12:28 a.m. on U.S. 19 because he was driving with a broken taillight, the reports state. They describe the incident:

Gubbini wouldn't stop.

He blew through stop signs, nearly hit a deputy's cruiser blocking an intersection at Grand Boulevard and Berryhill Road, drove into the front yard of Plantation Retirement Home, nearly hit another deputy's car and eventually stopped at Jarvis Street and Whippoorwill Drive.

He tried to run but was arrested at 1:05 a.m.

Deputies found traces of marijuana in the ashtray of the car, which was not registered but had the temporary tag from another vehicle.

Gubbini was being held without bail Tuesday night at county jail in Land O'Lakes.

Test of loaded gun sends bullet into owner's leg

NEW PORT RICHEY -- Randy Del Davis was cleaning his Smith and Wesson revolver Monday night when his sweaty thumb slipped and hit the trigger. The gun fired a round that went into his left thigh and out his left shin, deputies said.

Davis, 27, said he was checking to see whether the gun was loaded by pulling the hammer halfway back and rotating the cylinder, deputy reports state. After passing through his leg, the bullet lodged in a coffee table.

Davis was taken to Community Hospital, where doctors said he would be treated and sent home.

Student faces charge of weapon possession

NEW PORT RICHEY -- The rumor of a fight Monday led Ridgewood High School and law enforcement officials to search a student's car, where they found a hunting knife with a 41/2-inch blade, deputies said.

The 16-year-old, who is not being named by the St. Petersburg Times because of his age, faces a charge of possession of a weapon on school property.

The boy said the knife had been in his car for months, deputies said.

Man jailed, accused of attacking teenager

HOLIDAY -- A 34-year-old was arrested Monday night after deputies said he tried to strangle a 14-year-old, according to his arrest report.

Craig Jefferis of 5630 Cheyenne Drive faces a charge of child abuse, deputies said.

About 7:15 p.m., at a location deputies did not release, Jefferis got into a fight with a 14-year-old, his arrest report states. He hit the child in the head, wrestled with him on the living room floor and grabbed him around the throat, the report states.

Jefferis was being held Tuesday night at county jail in Land O'Lakes in lieu of $5,000 bail.
