Sandwiches, salads are hefty, tasty at Colonial Corner

I know there's great debate over what constitutes an authentic Philly cheesesteak, and I have no idea whether the ones Colonial Corner turns out are "authentic." (They don't have CheezWhiz.)

What I do know is that there was a long line of people waiting to get these sandwiches and others at the small restaurant the other day. And I know that I liked the one I got quite a lot, with its chopped, grilled steak, melted cheese, grilled onions and mushrooms ($4.29, plus 37 cents for the mushrooms). Peppers are available, too, but I passed on those.

The mixture was creamy and delicious, packed into a soft hoagie roll.

I picked up lunch to share with my friend plus extra food so that we could sample a range of Colonial Corner's fare.

My friend is a great fan of both shrimp salad and crab salad, so I got her the shrimp salad hoagie ($4.53), one of that day's specials. It was loaded with good-sized shrimp, not those tiny canned ones a lot of people make shrimp salad with. She kept going on about how good the sandwich was. The mayonnaise dressing was light with just a touch of garlic and onion.

We both really liked the potato salad (74 cents) too. She said it tasted very close to her own recipe: bits of celery, chopped hard-boiled eggs, celery seeds, a touch of mustard.

Another salad was a surprise. The menu simply said, "Salad." It was listed as $2.61 for a small and $3.74 for a large. I figured it was a simple garden salad and got a large for us to share.

Wrong. This salad, tossed with vinegar and oil, had roasted peppers, chunks of mozzarella cheese, pepperoni slices, dill pickle slices, diced boiled ham and diced spicy ham along with the lettuce, tomatoes and normal tossed salad trimmings.

We couldn't finish all our sandwiches and the salads, much less the chicken salad on a hoagie roll ($3.31) or the homemade chicken noodle soup. But we tasted those and liked what we found there as well.

The soup ($1.49) was full of wide egg noodles, bits of chicken and chunks of carrot. Neither my friend nor I are huge fans of soup, but my daughter scarfed it down for her after-school snack.

The menu here varies a bit day to day. Chicken salad and shrimp salad are only available on Thursdays. Tuesday offers chili ($1.63) and chili dogs ($2.75). Clam chowder ($1.86) and crab salad sandwiches ($3.36 on kaiser roll, $4.53 on hoagie roll) are the Friday specials. Egg salad sandwiches ($2.75 and $4.06) are available Mondays.

All hoagies included tomatoes, lettuce, onions, pickles, sweet peppers, hot peppers, salt, sage and oil, if desired.

A range of other cold and hot sandwiches is available, including hamburgers, salami, sausage and meatball, grilled chicken and cheese, all priced from about $1.90 to about $4.75.
