Softball

East Lake's Erica Weaver signed with Georgia Southern, a Division I-AA school in Statesboro. Weaver, a centerfielder, was a Times second-team all-county selection last spring, batting .426 with 12 RBIs.

"She has the opportunity to go in and start right away," said Dion Weaver, Erica's father and Clearwater Bullets club team coach.

Basketball

Largo's Billy McDade, a 6-foot-8, 180-pound forward, signed with the University of New Orleans.

"They liked his outside shooting and he moves well for his size," Largo coach Phil Price said. "They just thought he was a well-skilled 6-8 player."

McDade was a second-team All-Pinellas County Athletic Conference pick last year.

"We feel like we got one of the top high school prospects in the state of Florida," New Orleans coach Monty Towe said. "He's as good a shooter as I've seen. I wish we had him right now, but we'll let Phil keep him for another year."

Track

Northside Christian's Blair Newcomb, a two-time All-Pinellas County track selection and the 2000 state champion in the pole vault, signed with South Florida. Newcomb won the Class A state title in the spring with a leap of 10 feet. Her best jump of the year was 10-6.

Baseball

Northside Christian's Jeremy Hunt, who played last season for Tampa Jesuit before transferring, signed with Maryland.

Hunt, a right-handed pitcher and first baseman, played in the Pinellas County Wooden Bat League during the summer. Coach Darrell Don said he has hit 90 to 91 mph with his fastball.

Hunt, 6 feet 1, 195 pounds, will pitch and play first base for the Terrapins, coached by former University of Tampa coach Terry Rupp.
