State attorney still a defender

In his campaign to be Hillsborough's state attorney, candidate Mark Ober stressed his experience on both sides of the courtroom, both as prosecutor and criminal defense lawyer. Ober has since been elected, but he has a certain matter to take care of before he takes the helm as the county's top prosecutor in January.

He'll be in a murder trial. As a defense lawyer.

Along with attorney Norman Cannella, Ober is scheduled to represent John Peel in Pinellas court. Peel was an 18-year-old father in June 1998 when he was accused of shaking his infant son to death in St. Petersburg. The case is scheduled for trial Dec. 12.

Ober said he simply has an obligation to his client and his client's family.

"I'm going to see it through," he said.

STRAWBERRY A WITNESS: Look for suspended New York Yankees slugger Darryl Strawberry in court today -only this time, not because of his own troubles. Strawberry, recently sentenced to 30 days in jail after he violated drug offender probation for the third time, is expected to appear today as a witness in the attempted murder trial of Joe Earl Harrison. Harrison is accused of shooting a woman in the face after an argument. According to court records, Harrison made a statement to Strawberry and another man about his involvement in the shooting, and that made Strawberry a state witness. He is expected to testify today.

NO EXCUSES: The next time you think those sniffles might get some sympathy from the cop pulling you over for speeding, think again.

After Tampa police Officer Howard Buchanan stopped a driver exceeding the limit near Lowry Park Zoo, she told him the young boy next to her had been to the doctor's office. And if she didn't rush to the pharmacy right away and get his medication, he could have a seizure.

No, she told Buchanan when he offered, she did not want an ambulance, but she didn't deserve a ticket. She even flashed a prescription as proof.

But Buchanan recognized the drug as an antibiotic his own young son had recently been prescribed. Buchanan then called the boy's pediatrician, who said the boy was not in danger of seizures from his strep throat.

As he handed the prescription back, Buchanan said, he included a ticket with it.

"I think she was rather shocked," he said.

DEPUTIES' YARD SALE: Like other cops and firefighters, the deputies at the Hillsborough Sheriff's District I office adopt needy families for the holidays from the neighborhoods that surround their station, smack in the heart of Suitcase City.

But this year, instead of just pulling money from their pockets, the men and women in green are holding a yard sale of clothes, toys, furniture and appliances to raise funds for the families on their list.

The event, to be held Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., will be at the Community Resource Center at 13701 N 23rd St.
