Eagles overwhelm Mustangs

SPRING HILL -- Soccer class was in session Wednesday night as Springstead offered first-year Mitchell a free lesson.

Springstead dazzled the overmatched Mustangs, winning 10-0 in about 51 minutes.

Springstead's Steve Bates chewed up Mitchell's mostly freshman team. Bates tallied four goals and an assist in the first half.

The Eagles' offense was directed by Bobby Colon, who had four assists and one goal. Springstead's Greg Emmerman chipped in three goals and two assists.

Springstead's speed and size overwhelmed Mitchell as the Eagles opened up an 8-0 halftime lead by picking off outlet kicks from Mustangs goalie Bill Chapman. Springstead launched 29 shots by the half. Mitchell didn't get off a shot until the 20-minute mark.

"Against a team like this, small and short, we're going to win those balls," Springstead coach Sal Calabrese said. "We won't be able to do that Tuesday at Zephyrhills."

Springstead opened with two goals in the first two minutes. Mitchell's defense then held the Eagles scoreless for 19 minutes, but Colon hit Bates on a breakaway in the 23rd minute to open the floodgates.

The Eagles added another three goals in a 10-minute span to build up a 6-0 edge.

Mitchell has had a rough run in its first two games, losing both District 2A-8 contests by an 18-0 margin.

Mitchell coach Steve Gray isn't surprised by his team's first week, especially since the Mustangs passed on a chance to begin with a junior varsity schedule.

"The way you get better in soccer, or any sport, is to play players better than you. And you can see it," Gray said. "We expect this, but I told my team that we treat this as a scrimmage, a practice for us. This is a building year."
