League suspends May for 20 games

NEW YORK -- Coyotes left wing Brad May was suspended for 20 games by the league Wednesday for a slash to the head of Columbus forward Steve Heinze.

The suspension matches the fourth-longest in history for an on-ice violation and will cost May almost $120,000 in salary.

"You have to be held accountable for your actions and your stick," May said. "It was completely unintentional. I had no reason to go after Steve Heinze."

He apologized to Heinze after the game. Heinze accepted the apology.

In other news, the league will enforce its rule requiring a two-minute penalty for diving or faking an infraction, said Colin Campbell, the league's vice president of hockey operations.

Part of NHL Rule 41 -- "Abuse of Officials and other Misconduct" -- stipulates that a penalty can be called on a player "who attempts to draw a penalty by his actions."

BRUINS-OILERS TRADE: Boston obtained Bill Guerin, the league's third-leading goal scorer, for holdout Anson Carter in a swap of right wings. The Oilers also received Boston's second-round draft choice in 2001, a choice of switching first-rounders with the Bruins in 2001 or 2002 and future considerations.

RANGERS: Right wing John MacLean, a 16-year veteran, cleared waivers and was assigned to the Manitoba Moose of the IHL.

SABRES: Forward Stu Barnes was placed on injured reserve, retroactive to Nov. 3. Forward Chris Taylor was recalled from Rochester of the AHL.

Wednesday's games

PANTHERS 4, HURRICANES 1: Greg Adams scored in his 1,000th career game and rookies Denis Shvidki and Marcus Nilson added goals 1:16 apart for visiting Florida.

"As a team, we were in dire straights for a victory," goaltender Trevor Kidd said. "It was a huge conscious effort on our part to take care of our defense tonight.

The injury-riddled Panthers, playing without seven regulars, snapped their six-game winless streak for their league-low second victory in 16 games.

Adams scored six minutes into the second period with his 345th career goal.

THRASHERS 1, PREDATORS 0: Milan Hnilicka stopped all 37 Nashville shots for his first career shutout and Yannick Tremblay scored in Atlanta's first home win this season. The win ties the Thrashers atop the Southeast Division with the Lightning.

Tremblay snapped the tie with 4:58 left in the second period. His slap shot from the right boards above the circle deflected off the skate of defenseman Cale Hulse, who was standing in front of the Predators net. Goalie Tomas Vokoun had no chance to make a play as Tremblay scored his second of the season.

FLYERS 2, LEAFS 1 (OT): Mark Recchi returned to the lineup after missing nine games with a concussion and scored the winner for visiting Philadelphia. Trailing 1-0, Ruslan Fedotenko scored for the Flyers in the first period.

RED WINGS 4, SHARKS 1: Mathieu Dandenault scored his first two goals of the season to lead host Detroit.

The Sharks came to Joe Louis Arena on a roll, having lost just once in 11 games, including a come-from-behind, 3-2 win over New Jersey on Tuesday night. Goalie Evgeni Nabokov had led the way, going 9-0-2 in 11 starts.

STARS 2, SABRES 2 Brett Hull scored to give visiting Dallas the tie. Hull's goal, which extended his point streak to five games, came just 46 seconds after former Lightning captain Chris Gratton put the Sabres ahead in the third period.

RANGERS 3, WILD 2: Trailing 1-0, Theo Fleury scored his fourth short-handed goal of the season to start a three-goal spurt in the second period for visiting New York.
