AFA caps off perfect season

ST. PETERSBURG -- Attempting to pull off an undefeated season usually becomes more difficult with each passing week. Sometimes it's the opposition that gets tougher, sometimes it's the pressure to keep winning.

Thursday night Admiral Farragut overcame both with a 31-30 victory over Temple Heights Christian in double overtime to win the Independent Bowl, and more important, to cap off a perfect 11-0 season.

"I thought we were done," Admiral Farragut coach Mike Jalazo muttered after watching a two-point conversion attempt by Temple Heights fail, securing his team's victory.

Trailing 24-21 with the clock winding down in the fourth quarter, Blue Jackets' quarterback Marshall Hampton completed a 42-yard pass to Glen Johnson with 5.8 seconds remaining. Brian Jack, who was playing with a pulled groin, trotted onto the field and hit a perfect 43-yard field goal as time expired to tie the game at 24, sending it into overtime.

After watching AFA take a 31-24 lead in overtime on a two-yard touchdown run by Josh Twiselton, Temple Heights responded with a touchdown from the 1-yard line. However, instead of playing for the tie, Temple Heights coach Steve Lewis tempted fate and went for the two-point conversion.

Quarterback Daniel Sayne's pass was deflected in the end zone by AFA's Wes Erbe to end it. Erbe was the center of attention for the Blue Jackets as he accounted for all three of the team's touchdowns in regulation and finished the game with 170 yards rushing. Twiselton added 80 yards to go along with his game-winning score.
