Kane joins Mallon in LPGA lead

DAYTONA BEACH -- Once the most popular bridesmaid in women's golf, Lorie Kane took a step toward another victory Thursday with 5-under 67 that gave her a share of the lead with Meg Mallon in the season-ending Arch Wireless Championship.

The Canadian, a runner-up nine times before finally getting on track with three victories this year, bounced back with birdies after her only two bogeys and closed out a solid round on the Legends Course at LPGA International with an 8-iron shot to 4 feet.

Sweden's Annika Sorenstam, Dottie Pepper and Leta Lindley shot 68.

Australia's Karrie Webb, who needs a victory to become the first player in LPGA history to crack the $2-million barrier, shot 75. She was 2 under over the final four holes to avoid her worst round of the year.

PEBBLE BEACH INVITATIONAL: Wendy Ward shot 7-under 65 for a two-stroke lead over three men after the first round of the Pebble Beach Invitational.

Two-time U.S. Open winner Andy North was in second along with Todd Fischer and Jay Davis III. North and Davis opened on the Pebble Beach course and Fischer played at Spyglass Hill.

The 29th annual event features players from the PGA Tour, Senior PGA Tour, LPGA Tour and Buy.com Tours as well as club pros and amateurs. The winner gets $60,000.

JOHNNIE WALKER CLASSIC: Wayne Smith made eight birdies and shot 7-under-par 65 to take the lead after the first round in Bangkok, Thailand.

Tiger Woods opened with 68 and was tied for fourth place with five others.

Smith was one stroke ahead of fellow Australian Paul Gow, and Scotland's Paul Lawrie was third with 67 on the 6,989-yard Alpine Golf and Sports Club course.

During his 16-year professional career, Smith, 39, has won twice on both the Australasian and Japanese tours, but he hasn't had many rounds better than this one. He made three straight birdies heading into the turn, then had another five on the back nine.

DUNLOP PHOENIX: Ed Fryatt and Scotland's Andrew Coltart took advantage of ideal conditions to share the lead after the first round of the $1.8-million tournament in Miyazaki, Japan.

They shot 7-under 64 at the 6,856-yard, par-71 Phoenix Country Club to lead Japan's Shingo Katayama by a shot.
