Blue Jackets win 4th in row to tie expansion mark

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Geoff Sanderson and Kevin Dineen scored in the first four minutes and the Columbus Blue Jackets tied an NHL expansion-team record with their fourth straight victory, 5-1 over the Predators on Thursday night.

The mark is shared by eight teams, most recently the Florida Panthers in 1994. Columbus plays the Panthers at home tonight.

Dineen had a goal and an assist, Ron Tugnutt (5-1-1 in his past seven starts) made 29 saves and Jamie Heward set up two goals to lead the Blue Jackets.

Sanderson, who once scored 46 goals in a season, has a six-game point streak (four goals, two assists).

HURRICANES 1, SENATORS 0: Shane Willis scored a power-play goal midway through the third period and Arturs Irbe recorded his second straight shutout over Ottawa as Carolina posted just its second win in nine road games. Irbe turned aside 27 Senators shots, including numerous scoring opportunities. He has 26 career shutouts. The Senators, who scored 54 goals in their first 14 games, haven't scored in 141:40 and are without a goal in seven periods.

DEVILS 3, BRUINS 2: Scott Gomez scored with two seconds left in overtime as visiting New Jersey snapped a six-game losing streak. Petr Sykora tied it at 2-2 for the Devils, scoring a short-handed goal with 1:58 remaining when he stole the puck at the Bruins blue line. Goalie Martin Brodeur had 36 saves for the Devils and won for the first time since Oct. 30.

COYOTES 6, AVALANCHE 3: Keith Tkachuk scored two power-play goals and Trevor Letowski had a goal and two assists as host Phoenix snapped Colorado's six-game unbeaten streak. Tkachuk took over the NHL lead in power-play goals with nine. The Coyotes, who beat Patrick Roy and the Avalanche 4-0 in Denver on Oct. 30, continued to manhandle Colorado goaltending by handing 22-year-old Swiss rookie David Aebischer his first NHL loss (4-1-0).

BLUES 4, PENGUINS 3: Pierre Turgeon had two power-play goals and an assist to lead host St. Louis. The Blues remained unbeaten in eight home games, winning seven times.

BLACKHAWKS 5, FLAMES 2: Tony Amonte scored twice, including the go-ahead goal, as visiting Chicago stopped a four-game winless streak and improved to 1-1-1 on their eight-game road trip. Calgary, which lost for the 11th time in 19 games, is winless in its past six home games (0-4-2), equaling a team mark, and has won just once in 10 games.

CAPITALS: Washington defenseman Joe Reekie was suspended for two games by the NHL for an elbow to the head that gave Phoenix center Jeremy Roenick a slight concussion.

Reekie checked Roenick hard into the corner with 7:42 remaining in regulation in Tuesday's 2-2 tie at the MCI Center. Roenick crumpled to the ice, but no penalty was called. He skated from the ice under his own power.

Reekie will miss games against Montreal today and at Philadelphia on Saturday. He will lose $15,686 of his $1.5-million salary for missing the two games.

PLAYERS' ASSOCIATION: Mike Gartner is making it much easier for children in a remote Russian community to play the game that made him a star.

As director of business operations for the NHL Players' Association and chairman of its Goals & Dreams fund, Gartner, a 19-year NHL veteran, is heading to Russia to distribute equipment to underprivileged children. The fund was set up a year ago to distribute $15-million worth of hockey aid over five years.

"The equipment is going to make a world of difference to these boys and their families," Ilya Bantseev said from the Siberian city of Novokuznetsk. "It is a gift that many Russian boys can only dream about."

Many U.S. and Canadian communities already have received aid, mostly in equipment or arena improvements. Goals & Dreams is expanding outside of North America so the fund can reach other areas represented by NHLPA membership.

The amount of money distributed to each country reflects the percentage of NHLPA members of that nationality.

Profits from NHLPA-organized licensing deals, such as those with trading card and computer game companies, are being used to finance Goals & Dreams.
