Hingis coasts into Chase semifinals

Surviving a midmatch lapse, top-seeded Martina Hingis moved easily into the semifinals of the Chase Championships on Thursday with a 6-1, 6-7 (7-2), 6-2 victory against Nathalie Tauziat.

Ranked No. 1 in the world, Hingis is seeking her first major title since the 1999 Australian Open and her first victory in New York since winning this season-ending tournament in 1998.

On Saturday, Hingis faces the winner of Thursday night's second match between fourth-seeded Conchita Martinez and Hingis' doubles partner, No. 7 Anna Kournikova.

The second semifinal pairing will be determined tonight when No. 3 Monica Seles plays Amanda Coetzer, followed by Elena Dementieva against Kim Clijsters.

Dementieva upset defending champion Lindsay Davenport in a first-round match Wednesday night.

MORE TENNIS: Two-time French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten advanced to the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters, beating Patrick Rafter 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). Also, Marat Safin beat Sebastien Grosjean 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). Safin faces Alex Corretja, the No. 8 seed, in the quarterfinals today. Kuerten plays Albert Costa, who defeated Gianluca Pozzi 6-2, 6-4. ... Second-seeded Tamarine Tanasugarn defeated Iva Majoli 6-4, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of the Volvo Women's Open in Pattaya, Thailand.

AUTO RACING: Team Penske, preparing for a possible entry in the Indianapolis 500, tested at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this week for the second time in less than a month. Car owner Roger Penske has fielded cars for a record 10 Indy 500 winners but has not entered since 1995, the year before speedway president Tony George launched the Indy Racing League. Two teams from the rival CART series, including winner Juan Montoya's Ganassi Racing, entered this year.

COLLEGES: San Diego State will keep the Aztec mascot but is considering replacing its red-faced, glaring Indian logo. School president Stephen Weber's decision caps a controversy about the 76-year-old Aztec tradition, which American Indian and Latino students charge is racist and offensive.

HORSE RACING: General admission tickets for the Kentucky Derby were increased to $40 from $35, Churchill Downs said. The price of seats in the infield bleachers on Derby Day increased to $60 from $55.

SKIING: Sonja Nef was nearly flawless, winning the women's World Cup giant slalom in Park City, Utah, when first-run leader Brigitte Obermoser slowed. The race was skied on the course where the 2002 Winter Olympics' GS will be held. Nef had a two-run time of 2 minutes, 40.17 seconds, taking advantage of a wider, faster course on the second run to sweep past Obermoser, the Austrian who held a 1.29-second lead after the first run.

CYCLING: Frozen urine samples from riders at the last Tour de France will be retained beyond the deadline set for the development of a reliable test for the hormone EPO. The International Cycling Union said after Wednesday's deadline passed that it would keep the samples even though a reliable test for the banned performance-enhancer failed to get approval.

CRICKET: England reached 393-6 on the second day of the first Test against Pakistan after a record partnership of 166 between Graham Thorpe and Craig White.
