Winters appeals report

Women's basketball coach takes USF's EOA finding to final level.

University of South Florida women's basketball coach Jerry Ann Winters on Thursday filed an appeal of the university's Equal Opportunity Affairs report that found she retaliated against former player Dione Smith.

University vice president Laurey Stryker will handle the appeal. She has 20 business days to issue a ruling, which will be final, according to university officials.

Based on her ruling, athletic director Paul Griffin will decide whether to reinstate Winters, extend her suspension or fire her, university spokesman Harry Battson said.

Winters allegedly dismissed Smith from the team in April in retaliation for Smith's racial discrimination claims. She has been suspended with pay since Oct. 25.

Winters canceled a news conference Thursday to discuss the appeal. She has claimed the EOA report was incomplete and biased.

In addition to the EOA case, Winters and the university face six federal racial discrimination lawsuits by black former players and an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission complaint by a black former assistant coach.
