ST. PETERSBURG -- A national survey ranks Eckerd College among the top 25 colleges and universities in the country for undergraduate education.

Completed by freshman and seniors at more than 470 four-year institutions, the results of the 2001 National Survey of Student Engagement place Eckerd College among the University of Michigan, Whitman College, Illinois State University, Millikin University, Brigham Young University and Texas A&M.

This month's NSSE results, coupled with the college's recent recognition in U.S. News & World Report's America's Best Colleges (2002), will aid in recruitment efforts, said officials.

"It means some terrific news for us," said Jessica Korn, director of Institutional Research for the private liberal arts school founded in 1958.

"It validates what our faculty and staff provide for our students, and it also shows that our students are flourishing here."

The NSSE survey, which is administered each Spring, is designed "to help institutions improve by identifying areas of strength and areas that need improvement," said NSSE project manager John Hayek at Indiana University. Schools pay a $2,500 to $5,500 fee to participate in the survey.

Students who filled out the Web survey noted a need for more campus social activities. But they cited Eckerd's emphasis on close mentor relationships with faculty and its collaborative learning process via group projects, class presentations and community outreach. They also recognized the college's study-abroad, internship and volunteer opportunities.

Five other Florida colleges participated in the survey, including New College of Florida in Sarasota, Palm Beach Atlantic College in West Palm Beach, Rollins College in Winter Park, St. John Vianney College Seminary in Miami and St. Thomas University in Miami. Only Eckerd made the top 25.

Nearly 1,600 full-time, residential students are enrolled at Eckerd.
