Detective injured in crashBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published November 18, 2000 INVERNESS -- A Citrus County Sheriff's detective was injured in a vehicle collision about 5:10 p.m. Friday. Jackie Howerton, who investigates crimes against children, was taken by helicopter to an out-of-town hospital. The driver of the other vehicle was flown to a different hospital. That driver was not identified Friday evening. According to the Sheriff's Office, Howerton was driving an unmarked sheriff's vehicle south on U.S. 41, just south of County Road 486. The driver of a red Ford pickup truck that was northbound swerved into Howerton's lane. Howerton moved to the highway's west shoulder. The pickup truck went in the same direction, the Sheriff's Office reported. Both drivers were alone in their vehicles and were conscious when transported to the hospitals. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
