WHEN/WHERE: 8 tonight; Doak Campbell Stadium, Tallahassee.

TV/RADIO: Ch. 28; WDAE-620.

RECORDS: FSU 10-1, Florida 9-1.

COACHES: FSU -- Bobby Bowden (241-54-4, 25th season; 314-86-4 overall). Florida -- Steve Spurrier (111-23-1, 11th season; 131-36-2 overall).

LINE: FSU by 12.

THE PLOT: Not only is this one of the most intense intrastate rivalries in the nation with so many players former high school teammates or high school rivals going against each other, but the stakes are once again unmatched. For the seventh straight meeting, including the 1997 Sugar Bowl, one or both teams enter this game with national championship hopes. The winner could vault into No. 2 in the all-important Bowl Championship Series standings. Said Bowden: "We had those great games with Miami in the '80s (and early '90s) and we didn't realize we were playing the national championship. In October you don't think about that. Now if it's in November, you say, "Ooh boy. One of us might play for the national championship.' "

SERIES HISTORY: Florida leads 26-12-2, including a 9-8-1 mark in Tallahassee. But the Seminoles have won two straight and have not lost at home to the Gators since 1986; Spurrier is 0-4-1 at Doak Campbell Stadium.

HE SAID IT: "We have to go in there and earn our respect. It's going to be really challenging, but it could be the game that pushes us over the hump." -- UF senior linebacker Daryl Owens.
