TAMPA -- A room-size hole opened up Saturday afternoon in the floor of the Rusty Pelican restaurant when support beams underneath it gave way.

The restaurant sits on the beach just off the Courtney Campbell Parkway, with part of it on stilts. Just after 4 p.m., a portion of the kitchen floor about 20 by 30 feet collapsed and fell about 4 feet to the ground.

An estimated 100 people were in the building, including the kitchen, but no one was injured, said Capt. Bill Wade of Tampa Fire Rescue.

The Rusty Pelican, at 2425 Rocky Point Drive, will remain closed until engineers have inspected the building and determined what caused the floor to collapse, said Wade.
