The Fire Department also is asking for donations of toys and games for younger children and teenagers, said Cindy Parker, a firefighter and paramedic. The food drive was started five or six years ago by the late Demos Megaloudis, a Tarpon Springs civic leader and businessman, Parker said. The food drive continues in memory of Megaloudis, who died in 1996. Food and toys can be dropped off at the Fire Department, 325 E Lemon St. in Tarpon Springs, before Dec. 15. The best drop-off times are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, Parker said. She also won an award in the contest last year, said Fire Marshal Rick Butcher. In 1996, one week after her sixth birthday, Deanna nearly drowned while playing in the family pool. Winners in the poster contest each received a $50 savings bond, Butcher said. The other winners, chosen from about 300 entries, were: third-grader Brittany Gillett and fourth-grader Rebecca Wasif from Sunset Hills; third-grader Kevin Schwirian and fifth-grader Eric Simcox from Tarpon Springs Fundamental; and third-grader Samantha Reinheimer from Tarpon Springs Elementary.
