TAMPA -- Chamberlain was the lone area team to send swimmers to the state high school championships Wednesday at the YMCA Aquatic Center in Orlando. Although the boys team placed a disappointing 37th, individual swimmers did find some success.

Grant T. Nelson led the Chamberlain boys team while Katherine Pippinger was the lone female Chamberlain swimmer in attendance after qualifying as an individual. Nelson placed 13th in the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:52.05 time. He also was 10th in the 500-yard freestyle, swimming a 4:56.02 time. Pippinger placed 16th in the 100-yard backstroke with a 1:05.33 time.

CROSS COUNTRY: Three North of Tampa athletes have advanced to the state cross country championships, this weekend at Titusville Astronaut High. Leto's Jessica Shepphard and Chamberlain Nate Adams will compete in the Class 3A meet. Gaither's Amanda Wells will run in the Class 4A meet.

SOCCER: Gaither's and Wharton's boys and Chamberlain's girls opened their seasons last week with varying results. The Cowboys, beginning defense of their Class 4A state title, began the year in strong fashion with a 7-1 win against Hillsborough. Norris Hartzog and Bryce Wegerle combined for four goals and three assists in the win. Wharton, meanwhile, got two second half goals to tie Durant 3-3. The Chiefs' girls opened the year on the down side, suffering a 7-0 loss to Hillsborough.
