Ehrlich gets a touch of patriotism
By JACKIE RIPLEY © St. Petersburg Times, published November 19, 2000 CITRUS PARK -- If you're driving down Ehrlich Road between Sickles High School and the Veterans Expressway, you might notice something a little bit different and a little bit patriotic. American flags are lining the grassy median, the brainchild of Citrus Park businessman Hank Binder, a project he's dubbed "The Avenue of Flags." Binder hoped to mount the flags in time for Veterans Day, but weather and scheduling problems delayed the project. After about a week on display, the 10 flags will be stored until Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Pearl Harbor Day. Binder said he and his wife, Phyllis, who both served in the military, felt the Citrus Park Civic Association's flag project could "teach youngsters respect for the flag." Hillsborough County sheriff's Deputy Larry Flynn, who has helped by installing and keeping watch over the flags, was also instrumental in the project's success. Binder said the civic association is seeking donations to help pay for the 15-foot flag poles and 3- by 5-foot flags. He also will ask the civic association to mount a Citrus Park flag, welcoming visitors to the community. The entire project cost about $800.
