John Parrish, 80, architect of churchesBy CRAIG BASSE © St. Petersburg Times, published November 19, 2000 ST. PETERSBURG -- John D. Parrish, an architect whose legacy includes designs for the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle and several other Catholic churches in Pinellas County, has died. He was 80. Mr. Parrish, whose work included the original Ronald McDonald House adjacent to All Children's Hospital, died Friday (Nov. 17, 2000) at his home. Lung cancer was recently diagnosed, but he apparently died of heart failure, said his wife, Joy. A specialist in school and church design, Mr. Parrish worked on such projects as Holy Cross Church in St. Petersburg, St. Jerome in Largo and Holy Name in Gulfport. He also designed Oak Grove, Kennedy and Riviera middle schools and Campbell Park, Azalea and Oakhurst elementary schools. His credits also include the Starley White Library addition to the Science Center of Pinellas County, the State Office Building and Pinellas County Health Department Building in St. Petersburg. Born and raised in Altoona, Pa., John David Parrish moved to St. Petersburg in 1937 and went to work as a bank teller. After Navy service in World War II aboard a submarine chaser in the Atlantic, he studied at the University of Pennsylvania and received his degree in architecture from Tulane University in 1951. After three years with the Florida Board of Control in Gainesville, aiding in the design of the University of Florida Medical School, he returned to St. Petersburg in 1955 and began his architecture practice. He retired around 1988 from the architectural/engineering firm of Anderson, Johnson, Henry, Parrish. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects and the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. Survivors in addition to his wife of 13 years include two daughters, Cynthia Lee Parrish, Gainesville and Priscilla Lynn Parrish, St. Petersburg; two stepdaughters, Cathy Brownstein, New York and Judy Armandroff, Atlanta; a son, John Mark Parrish, St. Petersburg; two stepsons, Gregory Armandroff, New York and Warren Armandroff, Atlanta; five sisters, Aileen Adley, Pittsburgh; Patricia Padgett, Baltimore; Ruth McCormick, Asheville, N.C.; Frances McCord, Juno Beach and Anne Parrish, West Palm Beach; a brother, William Parrish, Lynchburg, Va.; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild. A funeral service will be at 12:30 p.m Tuesday at Our Lady's Chapel of the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle, 5815 Fifth Ave. N. National Cremation Society, St. Petersburg, is in charge of arrangements.
