A fond farewell

There was no question that saying goodbye was tough for the 25 South Florida seniors Saturday. Along with most of their teammates, the seniors hung around Raymond James Stadium long after they had defeated Austin Peay 59-0. They stood in the end zone as the band played, then flocked to a crowd of loyal fans who stood on the bottom row of the stadium to shake hands with the players as they went through the tunnel one last time. Several fans hung T-shirts over the railing for players to autograph as they left the field. Before the game, the players were introduced individually, then ran to midfield with a red rose for their mothers and other family members.

Take that

Austin Peay's defense had little success but did get a couple of big plays. Early in the second quarter, linebacker Bryan Johnson slipped into the backfield and sacked Bulls quarterback Marquel Blackwell for a 10-yard loss. Later, the Bulls threatened to score with third and goal on the 7-yard line, but linebacker Dustin Wilson picked off a pass from USF backup quarterback Mike Usry in the end zone.

Quoteable

"Toward the end of the game, it hit me. The last few minutes of the game the last five years flashed through my head and I got real teary-eyed. I'm going to miss these guys. It has been a blast." -- Senior center Joey Sipp, who started every game for South Florida since the program's inception.

"It hit me a little bit last night after the team meeting. It's going to take a while (to grasp that it's their final college game), but we will be all right." -- Senior defensive back Roy Manns.
