Italian-American Club hosts dinner-dances
CLEARWATER -- The Italian American Club of Greater Clearwater at 200 McMullen-Booth Road presents a pasta dinner and dancing every Tuesday. The club opens at 5 p.m. for dinner, followed by dancing until 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $6 for members and $8 for non-members.
The club also puts on dinner-dances from 5:30 to 11 p.m. every other Saturday. Tickets must be purchased in advance. For information or to purchase tickets, call (727) 791-8698.
People Uplifting People, a non-profit group organized in 1997, recently began providing mobility assistance to those not covered by insurance and unable to qualify for assistance from other charitable or government agencies. An approved applicant will be supplied with the mobility equipment needed: walker, wheelchair, scooter or power-fitted wheelchair.
The organization also provides cash to victims of tragedies such as hit-and-run pedestrian or auto accidents, DUI accidents, arson that destroys home and belongings, gunshot wounds, carjackings or drive-by shootings. For information, call Earl F. Leach at (727) 524-3502.
PALM HARBOR -- The Palm Harbor Men's Barbershop Chorus is expanding its membership and is looking for tenors, leads, baritones and basses who enjoy barbershop harmony.
The group meets at 7 p.m. every Monday at the Palm Harbor Senior Activities Center, 1500 16th St.

DUNEDIN -- Milwaukee Grove House, 653 Scotland Ave., Dunedin, has a few openings for low-income seniors who can care for themselves but no longer wish to live alone.

CLEARWATER -- More than 100 senior citizens make the unique handcrafted gifts sold at the County Senior Citizens Crafts and Gifts Shop, 940 Court St. The cooperative gift shop is sponsored by the Senior Citizens Services Inc. of Pinellas County.
Among the items for sale are baby clothes, woodcrafts, quilts and afghans, and kitchen and household gifts. There also is a year-round Christmas section. For information, call (727) 442-8104.
CLEARWATER -- To help alleviate overcrowding and give potential pet owners a chance to see the available pets via a computer, the Humane Society of North Pinellas Inc. has gone high-tech.
People now can view more than 150 adoptable dogs and cats by visiting the society's Web site, http://www.humanesocietyadoptions.com, then selecting Clearwater, FL.
The Web site will be updated regularly, said director Rick Chaboudy, to show pets that are available, which ones have been adopted and more. There are also helpful hints on how to care for pets and various resources available to pet owners.

CLEARWATER -- Gulf Coast Community Care, a non-profit and non-denominational organization, is seeking volunteers 30 or older to work with abused and neglected children. In its Permanency Support Program, the agency places volunteers with children ages 3-11 who live in state-sanctioned foster homes.
Volunteers are asked to spend between two and four hours a week with one child. The volunteer and child might participate in activities such as reading, fishing and baking. Both male and female volunteers are needed, particularly in mid and south Pinellas County. Free guide lists county youth service programs
ST. PETERSBURG -- A free guide listing more than 70 Pinellas County non-profit agencies is available to young people interested in performing a service learning project for the Bright Futures scholarships. Students who need to fulfill service-hour requirements for high school graduation also may request a copy. The guide, available through the Volunteer Action Center of Pinellas Cares Inc., gives a description of each agency, contact names and telephone numbers.

LARGO -- Free child photo I.D. and fingerprint kits are available through the Missing Children Awareness Foundation Inc., 13094 95th St. N, Largo. Since 1984, the non-profit foundation has made the kits available to parents and guardians in the event a child is reported missing.
Each kit contains a section for listing the child's physical description and any distinguishing marks, a dental chart to be filled in by a dentist, a personal information section, DNA instructions, room for a photograph and thumbprint and instructions. Kits are available in English and Spanish; specify when ordering. Send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Missing Children Awareness Foundation, 13094 95th St. N, Largo, FL 33773.
In addition to distributing the child I.D. kits, the foundation sponsors a Christmas party for needy families. For information, call the foundation at 585-5360.
Women 50 or older in Pinellas County may be eligible for free or reduced-cost mammograms from the Pinellas County Health Department. Women who might qualify are those without health insurance, those with low incomes or who are on Medicare.
Included in the appointments are a clinical breast exam and a free Pap smear test to detect cancer of the cervix in its earliest stages.

The Clearwater Public Library System's Reference Department recently completed a print edition and a new and improved online version of the Florida Resource and Opportunity Guide.
