The 51-year-old man who shot himself a few hours after he killed his Citrus Springs ex-girlfriend Thursday night died at an Ocala hospital Saturday.

Joseph Charles Beaulieu Jr. of 9040 SW 209 Circle in Dunnellon died after spending the last day and a half in critical condition, said Linda Nikolajski, spokeswoman for Munroe Regional Medical Center.

Moments before attempting to take his own life Thursday night, a distraught Beaulieu called 911 and told dispatchers he had shot his ex-girlfriend, Nancy Ann Cousinet, 45, earlier that evening at her home on W Dolphin Drive. Citrus County deputies found Cousinet face down on her kitchen.

When Marion County deputies arrived at Beaulieu's Dunnellon home, they found him in his backyard with a gunshot wound in the back of his head.

The couple had a stormy relationship, with Cousinet filing for a protective order in June to prevent Beaulieu from coming within 500 feet of her, her home or office at the Economic Development Council, where she worked part-time as a secretary. Cousinet thought Beaulieu was the person who had broken into her home June 4 and smashed a china cabinet and some crystal, reports said.
