Fantavision

SYSTEM: PlayStation 2

PRICE: $49.99

MAKER: Sony

Fantavision puts a unique spin on the puzzler, giving players control of a fireworks show. Connecting three or more of one kind of firework causes an explosion, which can set off similar fireworks, creating elaborate displays.

Grade: A-

SSX

SYSTEM: PlayStation 2

PRICE: $49.99

MAKER: EASports

This is simply the best snowboarding game ever, with beautiful environments, cool characters and fast play. Players can build up their power by pulling off tricks, which in turn leads to even better tricks.

Grade: A-

Smuggler's Run

SYSTEM: PlayStation 2

PRICE: $49.99

MAKER: Rockstar

Smuggling must be an exciting profession, but not in this game. The graphics are good, as should be expected from a PS2 title. But racing from Point A to Point B while avoiding cops doesn't make for the deepest experience.

Grade: C-

Midnight Club: Street Racing

SYSTEM: PlayStation 2

PRICE: $49.99

MAKER: Rockstar

Midnight Club re-creates New York and London and turns players loose in races against other outlaws. Driving around the cities is fun, and the fact that there's a point to it all makes it even better.

Grade: B

Madden NFL 2001

SYSTEM: PlayStation 2

PRICE: $49.99

MAKER: EASports

Madden NFL 2001 will not disappoint football fans who buy a PlayStation 2. The detail of the graphics is amazing, from the coaches on the sideline to the turf that gets lodged in players' face masks. It seems a little slower than NFL 2K1, but the abundance of options more than makes up for this.

Grade: A

NHL 2001

SYSTEM: PlayStation 2

PRICE: $49.99

MAKER: EASports

EASports didn't miss a step in its translation of the NHL series to the PS2. Arenas and players are reproduced in extraordinary detail and the play is as crisp as any installment of the franchise. A must for hockey fans.

Grade: A
