Dade City grabs two
By STEVE LEE HUDSON -- Dade City is proving to be fertile ground for young football players. For the second straight year, Dade City had two teams in Pasco Police Athletic League Super Bowls. On Saturday, the Pirates claimed two titles to double the number they won last year. Dade City defeated the Tarpon Springs Spongers 18-6 for the flyweights title and the Pirates won the mighty mites final, 20-12, over the New Port Richey Buccaneers. The Lutz Chiefs defeated the Hudson Cobras -- 14-8 in varsity and 29-6 in junior varsity -- in the other two Super Bowls at Hudson High's Cobra Stadium. "I think Dade City did pretty good this year," said Dade City director Bill Mooney. The Lutz varsity got a 34-yard scoring run from Jorice Young with 32 seconds left for a comeback win over Hudson. After spotting the Chiefs the lead on Carlos Gonzalez's 27-yard touchdown run, Hudson tied the game at 6 in the third quarter on a 90-yard pass from Andrew Hart to Robert Baird. "(Baird) got behind the defense and then it was a footrace," Hudson coach Bill Giambo said. Josh Hanson's extra-point kick (two points are awarded for a kick, one point for a pass or run) gave the Cobras an 8-6 lead. "We had a great run, and if we had to lose, at least it was to this team," Giambo said. Harold Clower had TD runs of 52 and 21 yards, and Brandon McSwain scored on a 2-yard keeper to lead Dade City's flyweights. Jamal Haynes and Duane Clower each had an interception. Tarpon Springs' Justin Jaeger had a 47-yard TD run in that game. Tyler Guy and Greg Jenkins teamed up for 13 of the Pirates' 20 points in the mighty mites final. Guy threw TD passes of 23 and 41 yards to Jenkins, who also caught an extra-point pass. Guy also scored on an extra-point run. Josh Johnson had Dade City's other touchdown on a 4-yard run. New Port Richey's touchdowns came on Kurt Holt's 50-yard run and Justin Chittum's fumble recovery in the Dade City end zone. Lutz took a 29-0 lead over Hudson in the junior varsity game. The Cobras avoided a shutout on Andre Richard's 19-yard TD run. Hudson's defense stopped three Lutz drives with fumble recoveries by Jacob McFadden, Tony Harrell and Tony Cavaliere. Calvin Smith ran for three TDs to lead the Chiefs. Andrew Whittaker added a 40-yard TD run. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
