    Educators to attend Florida Center for Teachers

    Five Pinellas County teachers have been selected to participate in the Florida Center for Teachers fall 2000 program. They are Leslie Black, Bay Vista Fundamental Elementary; Jennifer Clarke, Gulfport Elementary; Donna Fannin, John Sexton Elementary; Veronica James, Clearwater Discovery; and Terry Cubine, Seminole High. They teachers will attend a weeklong, all-expenses-paid seminar designed to inspire intellectual curiosity and provide professional rejuvenation. Selection was based on a passion for learning and commitment to excellence in teaching. The Florida Center for Teachers is a program of the Florida Humanities Council.     Top honors

    Barbara Thornton, principal of Largo High School, has been named Florida Art Education Association High School Principal of the Year. She was recognized Oct. 14 by Florida art educators at the annual art education conference in Jacksonville.

    Scholarships

    Hornsleth, a freshman at Florida State University, is active in student government and the Presbyterian church. At Dunedin High, she was chairman of the high school's blood drive and a three-year member of powderpuff football. She also received the Bright Future Scholarship and a scholarship from Safety Harbor Presbyterian Church. She is the daughter of Chris and Christine Hornsleth

    Ashleigh Kirsten, a 1997 graduate of Tarpon Springs High School, was inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. The honors organization recognizes first- and second-year undergraduate students who excel academically. Kirsten attends Florida State University, where she majors in nursing. She is the daughter of Nancy and George Barnes.
