Eight inducted to golf Hall of Fame

Juli Inkster and former PGA commissioner Deane Beman were among eight inducted Monday into the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine.

Beth Daniel qualified in 1999 but postponed her induction to the year her parents and the LPGA Tour celebrated their 50th anniversaries.

Others inducted were Judy Rankin, Jack Burke Jr., Sir Michael Bonallack, John Jacobs and Neil Coles, bringing membership to 84.

MORE GOLF: Bonallack, former secretary of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, was also appointed a non-executive director on the European Tour board. ... Inkster and Roberto De Vicenzo combined for a better-ball total of 7-under 65 to take the first-round lead of the $1-million Hall of Fame Golf Challenge at St. Augustine. They combined for five birdies on the front nine and added two on the back to lead J.C. Snead and Kathy Whitworth and Bob Charles and Joanne Carner by two shots. ... Tiger Woods extended his stay atop the world rankings to 66 weeks. He has 28.47 points; Ernie Els is second with 11.69.

HIGH SCHOOLS: The Florida High School Activities Association board voted unanimously in Gainesville to do away with the football open week next season. The move clears the way for the FHSAA to shorten the season by one week, something it believes is necessary to increase attendance at its six state championship games. In recent years those games have been played a week before Christmas Day. This year, state finals will be Dec. 14-16 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville. Next season, when the games will move to Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee for the first of two years, they will be Dec. 6-8.

SOCCER: An Italian player who fought in the locker room with an opponent after a game had brain surgery. Doctors said Francesco Bertolotti of lower-division Modena was in serious but stable condition after an operation aimed at reducing pressure from bleeding inside his head. The 33-year-old went into a coma Sunday after Massimiliano Ferrigno, captain of Como, punched Bertolotti, whose head hit the floor. ... D.C. United faces LD Alajuelense of Costa Rica and the Los Angeles Galaxy plays Real CD Espana of Honduras Jan. 17 in the first round of the CONCACAF Champions Cup in Los Angeles. The winner of the eight-team tournament featuring teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean, qualifies for the Club World Championship in Spain July 30-Aug. 12. ... Bradford City, in last place in the English Premier League, named Jim Jefferies, former coach at Scottish club Heart of Midlothian, as coach.

COLLEGES: Arkansas won the men's cross country team title at the NCAA Championships for the third straight year and 11th time since 1984. Keith Kelly of Providence was the individual winner on the 10,000 meter course in Ames, Iowa, in 30 minutes, 14.5 seconds. Colorado's Kara Grgas-Wheeler won the women's race in 20:30.5 over 6,000 meters and led the Buffaloes to their first team title. South Florida was 30th of 31 teams in both races. Rita Arndt (139) was the top USF women and Andrew Smith (102nd) led the men. ... College of New Jersey defeated Tufts 2-1 on Cara Gabage's goal with three seconds left to win the Division III women's soccer national championship. ... Tampa faces North Alabama in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II volleyball tournament Nov. 30 in Sioux Falls, S.D.

ARENA FOOTBALL: Arenafootball2 awarded an expansion team to Jim Foster to be called the Iowa Barnstormers, the same name as the Arena League franchise Foster sold three weeks ago, which then moved to Long Island.

TRACK AND FIELD: Runner Diane Modahl went to court to seek $1.5-million from the British federation, which suspended her after a drug test in June 1994 allegedly showed a high level of testosterone. The ban was lifted in July 1995 by the International Amateur Athletic Federation after doubts were cast on the accuracy of the tests.

BASKETBALL: The Tampa Bay ThunderDawgs of ABA 2000 will hold tryouts from 1-5 p.m. Saturday at Walker Ford Community Center, 2301 Pasco St. in Tallahassee.
