Road lanes to close near construction zone

SPRING HILL -- County Line Road near the Suncoast Parkway construction area will have intermittent lane closures from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today. Motorists are asked to use caution while traveling in this area.

Veterans program adds trip to medical center

The Hernando County Veterans Transportation Program is adding a Friday trip to the James A. Haley VA Medical Center in Tampa, effective this Friday. Rides are now available Mondays through Fridays. For those already signed up for these trips, call Trans-Hernando at 799-1510. Those interested in using this service can call the Hernando County Veterans Services office at 754-4033.

Craft fair, quilt exhibit scheduled for weekend

BROOKSVILLE -- The 19th annual Fall Country Craft Fair and Quilt Exhibit will be from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Hernando Park, 205 E Fort Dade Ave. There will be food and craft vendors throughout the park. Artisan vendors will include wood crafts, glassware painting, stained glass, hand-blown glass artistry, leather goods, photography, handcrafted toys and jewelry, Christmas items, dried flower arrangements and children's items. The quilting exhibit will be inside the Community Activity Center. Judging will be on Saturday, with ribbons awarded during the afternoon. Saturday entertainment will include local performers from the Hernando County Recreation programs. Sunday entertainment will include "Old Time Music" and a barnyard bandwagon. The event is sponsored by the Hernando County Recreation Department. For information, call 754-4031.

Saturday will be Adopt-a-Pet Day

BROOKSVILLE -- The Hernando County Humane Society will sponsor an Adopt-a-Pet Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Fall Country Craft Fair in Hernando Park, 205 E Fort Dade Ave. Homeless puppies, kittens, dogs and cats from the shelter will be available for adoption. Strings n' Strutters seeks new members

AARP seeks volunteers for tax aide program

AARP in Hernando County is seeking volunteers to participate in the AARP Tax Aide Program. Volunteers will assist the elderly and others who cannot pay to have their taxes done. Volunteers will receive training in January from instructors who are IRS-trained. Those interested in volunteering can call Joe at 686-7801.

Program offers range of educational services

HEART Literacy Adult Education Program provides free pre-GED testing and one-to-one and small group tutoring in reading and math (including English for speakers of other languages). Classes are provided for ages 18 and older at the following locations:

5 to 8 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, Spring Hill Elementary School, 6000 Roble Ave., Spring Hill.

9 a.m. to noon Monday and Wednesday, Church of the Nazarene, Cobblestone and County Line Road, Spring Hill.

9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday, Brooksville Assembly of God, 20366 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville.

1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, Robert R. Moton Early Intervention Center, St. Francis Street, Brooksville.

6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Masaryktown Community Center, Lincoln Avenue, Masaryktown.

6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, Eastside Elementary School, 27151 Roper Ave., Brooksville.

AARP offers driving course for seniors

SPRING HILL -- The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) will conduct it's 55/Alive Mature Driving classes at the following locations:

9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 8 and 15, Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 6193 Spring Hill Drive. Call instructor, 596-1759. Noon to 4 p.m. Dec. 11 and 18, VFW Post 10209, 15166 Spring Hill Drive. Call instructor, 686-1514. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 12 and 13, Grace Presbyterian Church, 8375 Spring Hill Drive. Call instructor, 596-1759. The course is open to everyone age 55 and older. The cost of the two-day course is $10. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate to submit to their insurance company for a possible reduction in rates. Class size is limited; register by calling instructors.

Pet first aid class scheduled for Dec. 4

BROOKSVILLE -- A Pet first aid class will be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 4 in the Community Activity Center, 205 E Fort Dade Ave. Participants will learn how to give medicine, how to perform pet CPR, and how to handle choking, bleeding, car accidents and poisoning. Participants will receive a certificate of completion and the Pet First Aid Reference Book. The cost is $25, payable to the Hernando County Recreation Department. Advanced registration is required. Deaf Service Center will show services Nov. 28

BROOKSVILLE -- The Deaf Service Center of Pasco/Hernando County will provide a free presentation of services and programs for the deaf and hard of hearing from 10 to 11 a.m. Nov. 28 in the Jerome Brown Community Center, off Darby Lane at Tom Varn Park. The center offers a client assistance program, an education and advocacy program, and a children and families program. Information, referral services, consulting services and support groups are also provided. For those who qualify, free loans of telecommunications equipment are available. Fantasy of Trees set for Dec. 1 and 2

BROOKSVILLE -- The 24th annual Fantasy of Trees and Holiday Craft and Gift Bazaar will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Dec. 1 and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 2 at the Hernando County Fairgrounds, 6436 S Broad St. On Dec. 1, there will be performances of the Arc Singers, Top Hats, Miss Charlotte's Suzuki Strings and Potter's Clay. On Dec. 2, entertainment will include face painting, balloon animals and storytelling for children. Santa Claus will be on site from 3 to 5 p.m. Performances will include the FirePower Youth Church Band and Singers, Bell Ringers, Laura Fitz Music Studio, Strings N' Strutters and a floor show. Admission will be $1 for adults; children ages 12 and younger get in free. The event is sponsored by the Arc Nature Coast, and more than 15 community clubs and organizations will be participating in the Fantasy of Trees. For information, call 544-2322, ext. 104.

Car wash fundraiser scheduled for Nov. 25

BROOKSVILLE -- A car wash fundraiser will be from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Nov. 25 at the Jerome Brown Community Center in Tom Varn Park, off Darby Lane. Custom washes will be provided by the center's youth, who are raising money for additional game equipment for the recreation room. The cost will be $2 per car; donations will be accepted.
