Suicide or slaying? Police still don't know

LARGO -- A week after 38-year-old Edwin Rivera was found dead in his home, Largo police say they still have not figured out whether he shot himself or was murdered. "We don't know," said Lt. Carla Boudrot. "Some things are very obvious and very apparent when you walk into a scene. Some things are not obvious. . . . Don't be surprised if for some time we don't release information."

Rivera's sister discovered him Nov. 14 in his home at 1562 Belleair Road. His daughter told the Times her father killed himself. However, Largo police have deemed it a "suspicious death" and are conducting a criminal investigation.

Volunteers needed to help abused, neglected kids

CLEARWATER -- Gulf Coast Community Care, a non-profit and non-denominational organization, is seeking volunteers 30 or older to work with abused and neglected children. In its Permanency Support Program, the agency places volunteers with children ages 3-11 who live in state-sanctioned foster homes.

Volunteers are asked to spend between two and four hours a week with one child. The volunteer and child might participate in activities such as reading, fishing and baking. Both male and female volunteers are needed, particularly in mid and south Pinellas County. Humane Society starts Web site to display pets

CLEARWATER -- To help alleviate overcrowding and give potential pet owners a chance to see the available pets via a computer,the Humane Society of North Pinellas Inc. has gone high-tech.

People now can view more than 150 adoptable dogs and cats by visiting the society's Web site, www.humanesocietyadoptions.com, then selecting Clearwater, FL.

The Web site will be updated regularly, said director Rick Chaboudy, to show pets that are available, which ones have been adopted and more. There are also helpful hints on how to care for pets and various resources available to pet owners.

The Clearwater shelter is also offering half-price adoptions for some pets. For information, stop by the shelter, 3040 State Road 590, or call 797-7722.

Housing available for low-income seniors

DUNEDIN -- Milwaukee Grove House, 753 Scotland St., Dunedin, has a few openings for low-income seniors who can care for themselves but no longer wish to live alone.

The residence also needs volunteers to read, visit with residents, play cards and do yard work. For information, call 736-6632.
