Letters to the EditorsWhy not show independent films?
© St. Petersburg Times, published November 22, 2000 Re: Multiplexes sprout, but art films left out, Nov. 10. I quite agree with Steve Persall: The new Muvico 20 Cinema at BayWalk should schedule some independent and foreign films in its smaller movie theaters instead of running the usual Hollywood epics week after week. I often patronize the Beach Theater, but it can't possibly show all the good independent and foreign releases that I would like to see. Surely Muvico management can set aside one or two of those 20 theaters for alternative cinema. Many patrons are tired of the usual films that are run everywhere in the area and are eager for something new and different -- films we read about in newspapers and magazines but rarely get to see.
BayWalk should attract a diverse crowdRe: Now playing, by Jon Wilson, Nov. 12. In checking out downtown St. Petersburg's BayWalk, I sensed a fashionable air and saw many proud faces. We have run through many periods and phases relative to the development of this general area. I believe the movie theaters at Muvico 20 in BayWalk, coupled with the great restaurants, fresh and upscale shops with their proximity to The Pier, museums, Tropicana Field, parks, etc., should make this a mecca for the masses. Of course, it must be thoroughly advertised to residents and tourists alike. We must continue, however, with the fresh ideas that improve vastly over the immature, that seek merely to imitate. Downtown St. Petersburg is special and requires special consideration and creative thinking.
