Late goal sparks Sens

KANATA, Ontario -- Daniel Alfredsson capped a wild final minute by scoring with 13.8 seconds left to give the Ottawa Senators a 2-1 victory Tuesday night over the Boston Bruins.

Alfredsson jammed Alexei Yashin's rebound between the pads of goalie Byron Dafoe at 19:46, 12 seconds after Bill Guerin silenced the sellout Corel Centre crowd with his first goal for the Bruins.

"I was a little discouraged just 10 seconds earlier," Alfredsson said. "It's a little bit lucky, but it feels extremely good."

Former Bruin Shawn McEachern put the Senators up 1-0 on a power-play goal with 59 seconds left in the second period, and it looked like goalie Patrick Lalime would make it stand.

But with Dafoe on the bench for an extra skater, Guerin, acquired in a trade Thursday from Edmonton, banged in a rebound with 26 seconds left.

The Bruins are 3-6-1-2 since coach Mike Keenan replaced Pat Burns, who was fired Oct. 25.

PANTHERS 4, CANADIENS 1: New management, same result for Montreal.

Denis Shvidki scored for visiting Florida just over a minute into the third period, ruining Michel Therrien's debut as Canadiens coach.

Coach Alain Vigneault and general manager Rejean Houle were fired Monday in a desperate attempt by president Pierre Boivin to shake up his team, which has the fewest points in the league (12).

Florida's third goal symbolized the agony of this season for the Canadiens. Shvidki threw a blind pass from behind the net, and the puck ricocheted off defenseman Patrice Brisebois and into the net behind startled Jose Theodore for a 3-1 lead.

The Panthers became one of four teams in the five-team Southeast Division with 15 points. Florida, Tampa Bay, Atlanta and Washington sit a point behind Carolina.

CANUCKS 4, BLUES 3: Todd Bertuzzi had two goals and an assist to lead visiting Vancouver, which snapped goalie Brent Johnson's seven-game winning streak. The loss also ended the Blues' unbeaten streak against Vancouver at 14.

Bertuzzi scored his second of the game 5:53 into the third period to give the Canucks a 3-2 lead, then assisted on Jason Strudwick's first of the season at 8:20 that made it 4-2.

BLACKHAWKS 4, COYOTES 1: Alexei Zhamnov, Stephane Quintal and Dean McAmmond scored in the third period and Chicago continued to make the most of a grueling road trip.

Jocelyn Thibault made 23 saves, and Chicago's penalty-killers, third-best in the NHL on the road, stopped three power plays as the Blackhawks improved to 2-1-2 on an eight-game trip.

MAPLE LEAFS 3, RANGERS 1: Tie Domi, Yanic Perreault and Igor Korolev scored, and Curtis Joseph made 31 saves for visiting Toronto.

The Maple Leafs have earned points in five straight games (2-0-2-1) to keep pace with first-place Ottawa in the Northeast Division.

AVALANCHE: Colorado, which has five injured forwards, recalled center Yuri Babenko from Hershey of the AHL. Chris Drury and Chris Dingman are out another month, and Peter Forsberg, Adam Deadmarsh and Stephane Yelle are out at least one more game.

FLYERS: Forward Keith Jones retired after nine seasons because, he said, a left knee injury wasn't going to get better. Jones, who missed the past 12 games because of a concussion and inflammation in the knee, was told by team orthopedic physicians surgery wouldn't help. He has had two knee operations since 1997.

SHARKS: Co-owner George Gund said his team won't make money again this season, continuing a trend that includes all but one season in the 10-year history of the franchise. San Jose lost an undisclosed amount of money last season. Gund refused to speculate how much the team would lose this season.
