Delray Beach Atlantic (8-3) at Gaither (10-1)
The game everybody has been waiting to see, Gaither vs. Melbourne Palm Bay, is one week away. The only problem is the Cowboys must get through Atlantic first and not get caught looking ahead to the team that eliminated them last year. Gaither already has set the school record for wins in a season, and one tonight advances it further into the playoffs than ever before. Gaither broke out the passing game last week, which should give Delray Beach Atlantic something to think about as it watches film. Purks' pick: Atlantic
Bradenton Manatee (9-2) at Hillsborough (11-0
A rematch of last year's region semifinal, this promises to be one of Hillsborough's toughest games this season. The Terriers won last year 17-14, and fans can probably expect another defensive battle tonight. Bradenton Manatee coach Joe Kinnan is one of the best in the state when it comes to preparing teams for the playoffs. Hillsborough coach Earl Garcia is one of the best coaches in the state. Period. The Terriers have played some close games this season, beating Gaither and Jefferson by seven each. The Hurricanes have not had a game closer than 11 points. That could be a factor late in a close game.
Riverview (8-3) at Bradenton Southeast (8-3
There is playing over your heads, and then there is Riverview. The Sharks have existed for three years, and they already have advanced further than some of the area's established teams. Tonight, however, the run most likely ends. Bradenton Southeast has all-everything quarterback Adrian McPherson, and he has proved to be a difference-maker all season. Take him out of the equation and Southeast still has more experience -- especially this late in the season -- and a 36-11 win over the Sharks in Week 2.
Titusville Astronaut (9-2) at Jefferson (10-1
This is the one Dragon fans have waited for since Dec. 3, 1999. That was the day Jefferson traveled across the state only to run into a large, talented and experienced monster known as Titusville Astronaut in the region final. The result was a 21-0 loss. This year, Jefferson has home-field advantage, but Astronaut still has one of the biggest offensive lines in the state. The Dragons have ridden their defense all season, and that will be a key tonight. If you like power football in the trenches, pay $5 and see this game.
Jesuit (10-1) at Crystal River (10-1
Something is brewing at Jesuit, and it could be a final four appearance. Crystal River still is without star running back Nate Madison, who left the team three weeks ago. Jesuit, meanwhile, keeps sailing along quietly with its own running backs, Aaron Fryer and Jonathon Giles, clearing the way for easy wins. Tonight should be another one of those.
Armwood (9-2) at Haines City (9-2
Haines City is hoping three times isn't the charm. The past two meetings between the teams have resulted in very close games and Armwood comebacks falling just short. This season, the Hawks rallied from a 22-8 deficit only to lose 27-21. Last year, the Hornets survived a last-minute rally to win 27-24. Tonight, we find out if the Hawks have finally solved the Hornets defense or if Haines City can dish out yet another devastating loss. Purks' pick: Armwood
