Zephyrhills police employees in spat

ZEPHYRHILLS -- Pasco County sheriff's deputies investigated an argument between a Zephyrhills police sergeant and his girlfriend this week, but no charges were filed.

According to sheriff's reports, deputies responded Wednesday to investigate a dispute that occurred about 7 p.m. Tuesday at the home of Zephyrhills Police Department clerk Cheryl Holmes, 42.

During the investigation, Holmes said her boyfriend, Sgt. Micheal Ray Counsell, 48, came to her house and tore up some photographs. The two also pulled gold chains from each others' necks.

Holmes said she did not want to press charges and said Counsell had been having trouble with some medication.

The Sheriff's Office report states Holmes said it was not her intent to report the incident, but a Zephyrhills police employee told a Zephyrhills detective about it later, and the detective called the Sheriff's Office.

Deputy Harmon Campbell concluded his investigation by determining there were no grounds for any charges.

Man killed trying to cross U.S. 19

HOLIDAY -- A 37-year-old New Port Richey man was struck and killed Thursday evening as he tried to walk across U.S. 19, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Kevin Kurtz, 3229 Seven Springs Blvd., was struck at 6:30 p.m. by a northbound 1994 Cadillac as he tried to cross U.S. 19 at Darlington Road, the FHP said in a news release. Kurtz had been drinking, the Highway Patrol said.

The driver of the Cadillac, 47-year-old Patti Jako of Holiday, was obeying the speed limit, the patrol said.

She and a passenger in the Cadillac were not injured, and Jako was not charged in connection with the incident.
