Plane bound for St. Petersburg crashes©Associated PressNovember 24, 2001 TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. -- A small plane bound for St. Petersburg crashed in the waters off Tybee Island, and rescuers were searching Friday for a North Carolina man and his 5-year-old son who were on board. The single-engine Mooney aircraft disappeared from radar Thursday afternoon several miles off the coast near the Georgia-South Carolina line, the Coast Guard said. It was headed from Rocky Mount, N.C., to St. Petersburg. A Coast Guard helicopter found a debris field Friday southeast of the site where the plane apparently went down, but the Coast Guard said it could not be sure the wreckage was from the plane. The Coast Guard identified the missing pilot as Christopher Scarbel, 42. It did not identify his son. Helicopters, rescue boats and a Coast Guard cutter based at Tybee Island were being used in the search. The plane apparently was carrying a life raft and an emergency beacon, the Coast Guard said. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
