Wings win Bowman milestone
DETROIT -- Sergei Fedorov scored two goals, including the winner with 28 seconds left, lifting the Red Wings to a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks in Scotty Bowman's 2,000th regular-season game as an NHL coach.
Matt Cooke drew Vancouver even at 2 with 4:04 remaining, setting the stage for Fedorov's clincher off a rebound he shot past Canucks goalie Felix Potvin. The Detroit forward scored three times in a 5-4 loss Wednesday to Boston.
The Canucks are 0-10-3 at Joe Louis Arena in their past 13 games.
Bowman, the winningest coach in NHL history, got a two-minute standing ovation when his 2,000-game milestone was announced.
Manny Legace made 34 saves to improve to 8-2-1.
CAPITALS 1, ISLANDERS 0: Olaf Kolzig stopped 22 shots in his first shutout and host Washington finally won a second straight game.
Dmitri Mironov scored a second-period goal for the Capitals, who have their first winning streak of the season. Washington beat Vancouver on Wednesday before handing the Islanders their seventh straight loss.
The Capitals are 15-0-2 against New York since March 2, 1997, their longest unbeaten streak against one team in the history of the franchise.
"That was easily our best defensive effort all season," coach Ron Wilson said. "Our intensity was there, and we shut them down in the neutral zone as well as we have anyone this year."
The shutout was the 17th of Kolzig's career.
PENGUINS 1, FLYERS 0: Garth Snow made 36 saves for his first shutout and Alexei Kovalev scored his 11th goal for Pittsburgh.
The victory snapped the Penguins' 13-game regular-season winless streak in Philadelphia, and also ended the Flyers' six-game winning streak.
"We played hard and we got good goaltending on the road," Pittsburgh coach Ivan Hlinka said. "Any time you beat somebody in the conference, you're happy."
Pittsburgh also moved past Philadelphia for first place in the Atlantic Division.
Philadelphia's Roman Cechmanek had won six straight games.
SABRES 3, RANGERS 2: Jason Woolley scored a power-play goal 7:50 into the third as host Buffalo ended a two-game losing streak. The defenseman scored his first goal of the season when Alexei Zhitnik's shot from the blue line went wide right, bounced off the boards behind the net and ricocheted to Woolley standing to the left of the goal. He bounced the puck off the back of goalie Mike Richter and into the net for the deciding score.
STARS 3, BLUE JACKETS 0: Ed Belfour stopped 23 shots for his fifth shutout in his past eight games. Belfour, who has a league-high six shutouts, has 54 in his career, 14th-best in NHL history. He had been tied with Ed Giacomin and Bernie Parent for 14th place. Chicago's Tony Esposito holds the modern record of 15 shutouts in 1969-70.
HURRICANES 3, BRUINS 1: Arturs Irbe made 16 saves as visiting Carolina extended its regular-season unbeaten streak at Boston to seven. Irbe has allowed eight goals in the last six games, and the Hurricanes are 4-2 during that span.
BLUES 4, PREDATORS 0: Lubos Bartecko and Craig Conroy scored unassisted and Roman Turek made 28 saves for visiting St. Louis. The Blues have not had a losing streak.
WILD 2, BLACKHAWKS 0: Manny Fernandez stopped 27 shots to lead host Minnesota to its his first shutout. It was Minnesota's first home win in nearly a month. Peter Bartos scored the winner on a power play in the second, sliding the puck between Jocelyn Thibault's pads.
CANADIENS: Rejean Houle, fired as general manager, will remain with the club as a public relations ambassador.
KINGS: Right wing Glen Murray had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. He is week-to-week.
SABRES: Defenseman Rhett Warrener (concussion) was placed on injured reserve. Defenseman Brian Campbell was recalled from the AHL to fill the roster spot. ... Forward Doug Gilmour was scratched because he was seeing a doctor about discomfort around his pelvis.
