A look back at the week's top stories.

EDC RECEIVES MONEY: A divided County Commission voted 3-2 to fund the Economic Development Council for another six months, with the hope that the controversial group will restructure itself or pass its projects onto another organization. The vote came after a heated 11/2-hour discussion in which several residents asked the county not to give any more tax dollars to a group with a questionable list of accomplishments. The $45,733.86 approved for the EDC comes from the occupational license fees paid annually by every business.

STATE CONSIDERS FINE: The Department of Juvenile Justice is considering a fine against the company that runs Cypress Creek, the maximum security juvenile prison, after three teenagers escaped last month. Facility administrator Eric Gallon of Correctional Services Corp., the company the state pays to run the center, also said a shift supervisor was fired as a result of the incident. But state and company officials asserted that those are only the first reactions to the Oct. 1 escape. More meaningful changes are under way to address ongoing problems at Cypress Creek.

SCHOOL LEADERSHIP CHANGES: Before a packed house of well-wishers, officials swore in new school Superintendent David Hickey, new board member Ginger Bryant and returning member Patience Nave during Tuesday's reorganizational meeting of the School Board. Nave will serve as board chairwoman.
