Women's tournament keeps bowling 'em over

Tournament director Marge Carver checked the crowded concourse at Southland Lanes in Pinellas Park and smiled.

"Through the 47 years of the St. Petersburg Women's Classic, women from all over the state and elsewhere have traveled here to compete, and that's a testimonial to how attractive the format is," Carver said.

The Classic has been Carver's baby for four years and even longer for St. Petersburg Women's Association secretary Maddie Dalrymple.

Dalrymple oversees competition at the second center, Sunrise Lanes, which is necessary for the crush of entries.

Helen Curcio, Sara Connell, Evelyn Gollschalk, Jackie Rodman and Iris Manning, from the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area, did not bowl well but had high praise for Carver and the tournament.

"This is one of the best women's tournaments in the southeast, and I'll come back for my seventh year next year," Connell said.

Curcio said: "I've been coming here for four years and it's always run very well with great competition."

The renewal drew 245 teams and 1,102 singles entries.

"We've had larger fields, but I consider this a strong turnout," Carver said.

Nearly every renewal has required two centers.

Proceeds from the event pay expenses for local delegates to the WIBC Championship Tournament at in Fort Lauderdale next April.

The Ocala Beare's won the team title with a 3,495 pinfall, 65 ahead of the Nasty Girls from Orlando.

Rene Collins and Cindy Kemple, Winter Haven, captured the doubles crown with a 1,532, and Ocala's Barbara Payne won the singles title with an 878 series.

St. Petersburg's Candace McCue was third in the all-events division with a 2,241, and St. Pete's Stephanie See rolled a 299 game.

FIREBALLS LEAD: The Fireballs are well ahead in Countryside Lanes' Young Olympian League with a 67-24 record.

Corey Bachan rolled a 95-222 for 8-and-under youngsters.

The Pin Heads lead the Junior Olympians with a 60-31 mark. Louis Sadowski of Striking City fired a 492 series.

Team 10 is the Olympians League leader at 67-24, and Team 1 leads the Countryside Elite with a 62-29 mark.

Jamie Potter and Nick Gates qualified for the Junior Gold national finals in Reno, Nev., next year after a shootout at the center.

IRVINE-INMAN WIN: Largo's Nick Irvine and Scott Inman won the A Division title in the 31st annual Upper Pinellas YABA Association's youth-adult tournament recently at Largo Lanes.

The duo fired a 1,416 winning pinfall two weekends ago, and it survived last weekend's final onslaught.

Grovie Dalzell and Ernie Pietroburgo captured the B Division championship with a 1,315 total, only 32 pins ahead of Katrinka Swenson and Ben Dowler.

Jordan and Dan Goodan won the C Division crown with a 1,337.

Other division winners were Stacy and Thomas Bates, D Class, 1,201, and Lauren Gifford and Joe Tucker, E, 1,110.

High games included a 272 by Irvine and a 268 by Jordan Goodan.

EAST LAKE 1-2: Both East Lake boys handicap squads are 1-2 as Pinellas County High School League action winds down for the season.

Coaches Mike and Linda Pavlak have their teams only seven points apart, with Osceola and Seminole third and fourth, respectively.

The boys scratch division lead, however, remains with Gibbs No. 1, which is nearly 11 points ahead of Dixie Hollins No. 1.

The Palm Harbor and Seminole girls teams hold leads in the scratch and handicap divisions, respectively, with little changes in the standings through the 14 squads.

The league ends Thursday with position rounds at Seminole Lanes.

The state prep tournament is Dec. 9 at Don Carter's Lake Worth Lanes.

AROUND THE LANES: Bill Ferrie rolled a 300-759 at Dunedin Lanes, and Mike Smith Sr. shot a 300-735. ... Mike Banner recorded a 300 game at Rainbow Lanes. ...
