By KEITH NIEBUHR YOUTH FOOTBALLCheerleading team takes third in stateThe Inverness Pee Wee Razorbacks cheerleaders had a big weekend. The 18-member squad of girls ages 10-12 placed third in the state at a 16-team competition in Jacksonville. Inverness advanced to state by finishing second in its district. Team members are: Ashley Amabile, Samantha Damron, Gillian Darby, Angela Defiore, Jamie Gajos, Marissa Gajos, Elizabeth Iglesias, Erika Hutchins, Rachael Hill, Nicole Jacobson, Amber Mekelburg, Courtney Nolan, Brittany North, Emily Pullen, Chloe Richert, Jennifer Sanchez, Candace Smith and Michelle Thornberry. The Razorbacks are coached by Diane Bywater, who is assisted by Katie Bywater, Judy Hawley and Kristi Judd. They've been practicing since Aug. 1. "The girls just pulled it through," Diane Bywater said. "They did what they were supposed to do." The finish is the best in Bywater's seven seasons as coach. RUNNINGPresnick, Schmidt win Paper ChaseTwo familiar faces claimed titles in Saturday's Paper Chase 10K at Rock Crusher Canyon in Crystal River. Ex-Citrus standout Cory Presnick won the men's championship in 35 minutes, 40 seconds. Inverness resident Jennifer Schmidt took the women's division in 42:59. More than 100 runners competed. Presnick, the state runner of the year as a senior at Citrus, is a redshirt freshman at Florida. A regular competitor this fall for the Gators, Presnick won Saturday by nearly two minutes. Schmidt has won several local races this year, most notably July's Citrus Summer Showdown at Whispering Pines Park. The 31-year-old mother of two also competed in last spring's Boston Marathon, placing 209th out of 5,711 female runners. COLLEGE FOOTBALLMarshall's Terrell picks right time to step upEx-Dunnellon standout Roberto Terrell, a starting cornerback at Marshall, found his way onto ESPN's highlights show Saturday night after returning an interception 76 yards for a touchdown in the Thundering Herd's 38-24 win over Youngstown State. The pick was Terrell's first. "Two plays before that (Youngstown State) ran the same route, and I was waiting on it this time," Terrell said in an interview with Marshall's sports information staff. Terrell, a 5-foot-9, 175-pound redshirt freshman, leads Marshall with a 23.8-yard average on 13 kickoff returns. He was a three-year starter at Dunnellon under coach Perry Brown. "He's a great kid," Brown said. "He's real smart. Although he wasn't very big, (Marshall coach Bob Pruett) said it didn't matter. He wanted to get a kid who worked hard and loved the game." GOLFSchoolastic Classic tournament is setThe sixth annual Schoolastic Classic Golf Tournament, hosted by the Women of Sugarmill Woods, is scheduled for Jan. 14 at Sugarmill Woods Country Club. The format is two better balls per foursome. The event begins with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. The $45 entry fee includes carts, lunch and prizes. For a donation to the association's scholarship fund, a professional will hit one of your tee shots. The maximum handicap allowance is 40 for 18-holers and 20 for nine-holers. All proceeds will go to the Women of Sugarmill Woods Scholarship Fund. For information, call 382-3062 or 382-3340. BASKETBALLPanther league seeks playersSpots are available in the Junior Panther Basketball League. The league is for Citrus County boys and girls ages 5-12 (as of Jan. 12). If there is enough interest, a separate girls league will be formed. Games will be played at Lecanto High School on Saturdays, begining Jan. 19. The league ends Feb. 23. Starting times for games are 8, 9 and 10 a.m. Registration forms can be picked up at Lecanto High. Additionally, an open registration is scheduled for Dec. 8 and Dec. 15 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the school. The cost is $30. For information, call 746-2334 and ask for Ron Allan or Chris Nichols.
