Volunteers: She's always ready for a new challenge
By FREDDIE HUDSON, Section Manager, Hillsborough County RSVP TAMPA -- Geraldine Bucceiro left Massachusetts for Tampa in 1973. For five years, she peeled shrimp, then worked in a full-service garage, doing everything from pumping gas to answering phones to cleaning the bathroom. Her efforts paid off: After a few years of saving their money, she and her husband were able to purchase the garage. Bucceiro later went to work for Farm Stores, where she was a dispatcher for 20 years. Bucceiro wanted a new career, so she applied to the Working Seniors Program seeking a clerical position. But she lacked computer skills. The program enrolled her in the University of South Florida SeniorNet Program to learn the computer skills she needed to pursue her career goals. She was hired and started work at Enterprise Source. Bucceiro is a widow with a single grown daughter who has three children. She also continues her longtime volunteer work for cancer patients: For more than 20 years, she has knitted hats and made turbans for people who have lost their hair during chemotherapy. -- Write to Hillsborough County RSVP c/o Seniority, the Times, P.O.
