Crash kills teen in BrandonBy TAMARA LUSH© St. Petersburg Times, published November 29, 2001 BRANDON -- One teenager died and another was seriously injured when their car struck a concrete pole on Intersate 75 and split in half Wednesday afternoon. The two teens were headed north on an access road that parallels I-75 when the driver lost control underneath the Causeway Boulevard overpass, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The car hit one of five concrete columns that support the overpass, spun around and hit another column, causing the car to break in half, the FHP said. The passenger, a 19-year-old man, was thrown from the car. He landed in the northbound lanes of I-75 and was struck by a vehicle, the FHP said. He died at the scene. The driver, also a teenager, was taken to Tampa General Hospital. Their names were not released Wednesday. Troopers said they think the driver was speeding. Neither person was wearing a seat belt. The crash, which happened about 5 p.m., caused rush hour traffic in the northbound lanes of I-75 to come to a standstill for hours. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
