Here comes Santa Claus!

Rescued at the 11th hour by the St. Petersburg Lions Club, the Santa Parade starts its march down Bayshore Drive at 10 a.m. Saturday, led by grand marshals Lauren Mayhew and Lydia Bell from teen girl group PYT. The parade, a St. Petersburg fixture since 1927, ends near North Straub Park, site of the annual Snowfest romp for the kids.

Earlier this month, it looked as if there'd be no parade at all. But since the Lions stepped up to be the major sponsors, so many groups and individuals have signed up that organizers are promising the largest parade in years. Among the participants: seven high school bands, police and fire departments, antique and race cars, jugglers and clowns, funny cars, and the U.S. Postal Service. The parade starts between Central Avenue and Fifth Avenue N.

Santa will be in the park nightly through Dec. 23. The family fun fest and Nutcracker in the Park also begin Saturday. All events are free. For information, call (727) 823-2000.
