In the park with Alien Ants
The best Michael Jackson song on the radio right now? Alien Ant Farm's raucous cover of Smooth Criminal. Just try to not stomp your hoof and bop your head to the awesome, "Annie, are you okay? Are you okay? Are you okay, Annie?" refrain.
You get the chance to hear that tune and other Alien Ant crowd pleasers live at radio station WSUN-FM 97.1 (97X)'s Next Big Thing concert, which also features Canadian pop punk act Sum 41 and metal meisters Disturbed, who delighted the Ozzfest crowd a coupla months back with their brooding, Black Sabbathy crunch.
The 97X Next Big Thing with Alien Ant Farm, Sum 41, Disturbed, Dave Navarro, Lit and other rockin' favorites takes place Sunday at Coachman Park, Clearwater. $20. -- GINA VIVINETTO, Times pop music critic
Classic country for modern tastes
The Derailers unite country music's past with its future. Drawing from such reference points as the Bakersfield sound, Texas honky-tonks, the country harmony singing tradition and the hillbilly rock of early Sun Records, the band creates classic country music for modern tastes.
Its latest album, Here Come the Derailers, was released in September and includes a cover of Charlie Rich's Mohair Sam.
The Derailers play at 8 p.m. Friday at Skipper's Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Road, Tampa. Tickets are $10 advance and $13 day of show. (813) 971-0666.
