Kiwanis Club plans first evening meeting

RIDGE MANOR WEST -- The Kiwanis Club of Ridge Manor will have its first evening meeting at 7:30 p.m. today at First Lutheran Church in Ridge Manor West, off Cortez Boulevard. The speaker will be Hugh Pascoe from Metro Planning. The club will continue to meet weekly at 7:30 a.m. Thursday mornings at Sherman Hills Golf Club, except for the last Thursday of each month, when it will be the evening meeting. The club is continuing its blanket drive; donations of blankets, gloves, socks and jackets can be dropped off at Gavish Century 21 Realty, Hernando East Realty and Dow Arms Room in Ridge Manor, which will then be distributed to needy children at Lacoochee Elementary School. Habitat schedules home dedication

SPRING HILL -- Habitat for Humanity of Hernando County will have the Mathis family home dedication at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The recently completed home is at 4267 Elwood Road. For information, call the local Habitat office at 683-6825.

Christmas concert for Salvation Army

BROOKSVILLE -- A Christmas concert to benefit the Salvation Army of Hernando County will be at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7 at Christ Lutheran Church, 475 North Ave. W. The concert will be presented by Laurie's Music Studio. It will consist of holiday music sung by three choirs: Laurie's Angels (girls ages 8-12), Spiritoso (girls ages 13-18) and the We Love To Sing ladies ensemble. There will be baskets in the rear of the church where donations can be made to the local Salvation Army's Christmas baskets. For information, call 796-0739.

Volunteers needed for family programs

The Department of Children and Families is looking for volunteers to assist in various capacities throughout its Family Safety and Economic Services programs. Those interested in volunteering at least one hour per week are needed in the department's Tavares and Wildwood offices to answer phones, file paperwork, coordinate community donation programs, transport children to appointments and help with Christmas present distribution. Brown Center offering various exercise classes

BROOKSVILLE -- The Jerome Brown Center will offer the following classes:

Kickboxing, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays (starting Dec. 5), taught by Mario Urso, who trained with Bruce Lee and teaches Jeet Kune Do. The cost is $20 or $40 per month for one or two classes per week.

Just Kicking-It, 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays (starting Dec. 5), taught by Mario Urso. This is a cardio/tae bo-like workout. The cost is $20 or $40 per month for one or two classes per week.

Jazzercise, 5:45 to 7 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays, 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. Wednesdays and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursdays (starting Dec. 11), taught by Tracie Morse. The cost is $28 per month.

Parkway construction bringing lane closures

SPRING HILL -- There will be intermittent lane closures on roads that intersect with the Suncoast Parkway construction zone from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. throughout December. Parkway officials ask that motorists use caution while traveling within the construction zone.

Two-day gem show set at Spring Hill armory

SPRING HILL -- The Withlacoochee Rockhounds' 26th annual gem show will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 8-10 at the National Guard Armory on Spring Hill Drive. The event will feature master carver, teacher and designer Lu Shu Jian, formerly of Fuchien, China, who was voted "best of show" winner at the Masaryktown Festival. Biologist to discuss white-tailed deer

BROOKSVILLE -- The white-tailed deer will be discussed at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Chinsegut Nature Center, 23212 Lake Lindsey Road. The speaker will be John Morgan, biologist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission who is also the deer coordinator for the agency. Arc Nature Coast getting Wal-Mart help

SPRING HILL -- The Wal-Mart Supercenter on Cortez Boulevard will donate a percentage of store sales made from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday to the Arc Nature Coast Inc. The Arc is a non-profit organization in Brooksville that has been serving the mentally disabled and their families since 1972. For information, call Annie Steen at Wal-Mart, 597-3807.

Seminar on Israel scheduled on Sunday
