Rate hike seems punishment for sin of water use

© St. Petersburg Times, published November 30, 2000

Re: Water rate hike under review, Nov. 28 Hernando Times.

There are hefty taxes imposed against those who imbibe alcoholic spirits, and those who smoke or chew tobacco, as well as those who drive their cars to work, to shop and -- perish the thought -- even recreate.

Now Hernando County Utilities Director Kay Adams, in her unabashed enthusiasm to save water, has proposed a further water rate hike for those of us who wash too much or drink too much of plain old, simple water.

Thank you, Ms. Adams, for identifying this as yet another cardinal sin and concomitantly issuing an atonement for this latest transgression.

Old election recount may be going a bit too far

Re: Failed 1990 candidate demands recount, Nov. 23 Hernando Times.

Is it possible that Mike Frazier is pulling our leg to bring to our attention the absurdity of the endless hand re-re-recount of ballots in South Florida?

We cannot object to the original machine recount of the ballots due to the closeness of the race and the fact that it was required by Florida law. To say that we can go back and change history that occurred 10 years ago is quite comical and a lot of us might appreciate doing so. At least we would all be 10 years younger and even have some of our loved ones back again, but then we would not have the joy of those who came later. The precedent that was set by this election (a very sad one) did not give us license to put everything into the retroactive mode.

Mr. Frazier sounds like an intelligent and decent man, but I would surely hate to see the residents of Spring Hill once again become the butt of jokes on Jay Leno's late night television show.

I would, however, like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Ann Mau, her assistants, and everyone who took part in handling these past elections, including the recount. You made us all feel proud to live in Hernando County.

Road repairs welcome, but causing headaches

Re: Teamwork is tried on road fix-up, Nov. 15 Hernando Times.

It's very nice that Spring Hill Drive is getting some much-needed sprucing up, but why doesn't Hernando County finish one project before starting another.

If you drive across Forest Oaks Boulevard and U.S. 19 you practically have to make a U-turn and go into Consumer Car Repair for new shock absorbers. Half as many cars make the light because you have to go slow so your head doesn't hit the roof of your car.

Attraction parking lot is becoming an eyesore

Once again the owners of the Weeki Wachee Spring have turned their parking lot into a used car lot. I don't know how the county can let them inflict this eyesore on the community. It has to be the only tourist attraction in the country that would do this.

I think they should move it to Disney World or Busch Gardens.

School leaders should take reader's letter to heart

Re: Teachers should be ones making the decisions, Nov. 17 letter to the editor.

I applaud Raymond Wing and his message, which I believe should be handed to the School Board and Superintendent John Sanders for them to digest and honestly consider.

The final paragraph should run in bold type at least weekly until we get the attention of administrators, school counselors, board members and parents.

Ballots without postmarks are highly questionable

Re: Group pickets over military votes, Nov. 25 Hernando Times.

First, let me say that I really do appreciate what our veterans do for us overseas. They risk their lives every day so we may have a little bit of freedom. Actually, these people deserve a medal and a raise.

Having voted third party, I can honestly say that I am one of the few people able to be neutral about the fight for the White House. The truth is any ballot that comes in without a postmark, should not be counted for the simple fact that George W. Bush could have stolen blank ballots, voted for himself, then mailed it to the election officials.
