ORLANDO -- Karl Malone had 27 points and 11 rebounds Wednesday night as the Utah Jazz held off the Magic to win their fifth straight, 88-86.

Orlando's John Amaechi hit a pair of free throws with 32.5 seconds left to cut Orlando's deficit to 88-86.

The Magic rebounded a missed layup by Utah's Bryon Russell, but Tracy McGrady was swarmed as he tried to get off a shot, prompting Magic coach Doc Rivers to run onto the court and argue that McGrady was fouled as time expired.

McGrady, playing with a heavily bandaged and infected left hand, had 28 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 8 turnovers. Amaechi scored 17 and Darrell Armstrong 11.

Reserve Danny Manning scored 11 for Utah. Russell and Olden Polynice had 10 each.

Orlando led all second half until Malone hit a free throw to tie the score at 84 and a jumper to put the Jazz up two with 1:12 left.

A pair of free throws by Manning gave Utah a four-point lead with 39.1 seconds left.

Orlando led by as many as nine points in the fourth quarter, but the Jazz used an 11-3 run to cut the lead to 79-78 with 5:21 left.

McGrady helped break open a close game when he scored eight consecutive points early in the third quarter to give Orlando a 58-48 lead.

Malone then scored the game's next six points to get the Jazz within 58-54. But McGrady followed with a dunk as the Magic built its lead to 71-62 after three quarters.

Orlando closed the first half on an 11-4 run to lead 47-46.

76ERS 93, WIZARDS 87: Allen Iverson scored 29 points and Theo Ratliff and Eric Snow 18 each as host Philadelphia, which had lost two of three after a franchise-best 10-0 start, improved to 12-2.

Washington took its first lead since the opening minutes at 87-86 as Rod Strickland hit a pair of free throws to complete a 17-5 run with 2:42 left. A three-pointer by Mitch Richmond had cut it to 86-85.

Iverson made it 88-87 on a driving layup with 2:22 left after the Sixers missed 12 straight shots and went 7:58 without a field goal.

Richmond missed a jumper and, after Snow missed a jumper, Iverson intercepted an outlet pass and Snow made two free throws to give the Sixers a 90-87 lead with 29.4 seconds left.

HORNETS 103, RAPTORS 79: David Wesley scored 32 points to lead host Charlotte to its sixth straight victory. The Raptors were without star Vince Carter for the second straight game, both losses. Carter, the NBA's second-leading scorer at 27.5 points per game, remained in Canada to receive treatment on his strained left quadriceps.

PISTONS 97, NETS 76: Jerry Stackhouse had 31 points and Ben Wallace added a career-high 23 rebounds for host Detroit, which played without starting point guard Chucky Atkins (sprained ankle) and sixth man Jerome Williams (flu). For the second game in a row, Stackhouse was the only Pistons starter in double figures.

NUGGETS 107, T'WOLVES 100: Nick Van Exel had 30 points, including a go-ahead three-pointer with 2:12 left for visiting Denver. Todd Day's three-point play gave Minnesota its first lead since the middle of the third quarter with 2:28 left, but Van Exel put the Nuggets up 100-98 with his fifth three-pointer.

Around the league

NBA, CBA REACH DEAL: The NBA and Continental Basketball Association extended their agreement through the 2000-01 season, which could be the final year of their partnership. The CBA will be paid $2.5-million for training current and future referees and for making players available to NBA teams on short notice. The NBA plans to launch its National Developmental Basketball League next year, and a consortium of former NBA players and coaches have signed a letter of intent to purchase the CBA from Isiah Thomas.

HEAT: Forward Don MacLean was suspended for five games for testing positive for steroids. The NBA didn't provide details, citing its collective bargaining agreement with the union. The agreement prohibits publicly discussion aspects of drug testing except to announce a suspension.

PISTONS: Guard Dana Barros was activated before the game against the Nets.

76ERS: Allen Iverson plans to marry Tawanna Turner, his longtime fiancee and the mother of his two children. Iverson did not give details.

SPURS: Power forward Samaki Walker was placed on the injured list with a sprained left ankle.

T'WOLVES: An NBA hearing to determine who was involved in the secret agreement with former forward Joe Smith is scheduled for Dec. 12-13 in New York. Arbitrator Kenneth Dam is expected to hear testimony from the team to determine its role in the salary-cap circumvention case. Smith signed a free-agent contract with Minnesota in 1999, along with a secret promise of $86-million over seven years, a deal that violated the salary cap.

TRAIL BLAZERS: Center Arvydas Sabonis is expected to miss at least one game after re-injuring his left knee. X-rays showed no ligament damage. Sabonis had arthroscopic surgery in mid October to repair torn cartilage in the knee.
