Rangers' winless skid against Devils reaches 20

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Jason Arnott scored twice in a four-goal third period for New Jersey and the Devils extended their three-plus-year unbeaten streak against the New York Rangers to 20 games with a 5-2 victory Wednesday night.

Brian Rafalski and Jay Pandolfo also scored in the final period and Martin Brodeur stopped 18 shots as the Devils won a season-high sixth straight game following a six-game losing streak.

Manny Malhotra and Petr Nedved scored for the Rangers, whose last win against New Jersey was a 3-0 victory on Jan. 12, 1997. They are 0-14-6 since.

Most of those games have been lopsided, but the Rangers had hopes of ending the run with Mark Messier back in the lineup for the first time since the 1997 season.

For two periods, Messier's presence seemed to inspire New York.

It was 1-1 entering the third period, but the Devils grabbed the lead for good shortly after Messier was hit on the left knee by a shot 3:50 in. He skated to the bench and that's where he was at 4:34 when Arnott blasted a shot from the right sideboards.

Messier staked onto the ice during a stoppage shortly after Arnott's third goal. He lifted his right leg up to test his balance and he fell, drawing cheers from Devils fans.

BLUES 6, MAPLE LEAFS 5 (OT): Jochen Hecht scored the winner as visiting St. Louis rallied from a five-goal deficit in the third.

Alexander Khavanov scored twice for the Blues, including the tying goal with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation.

Chris Pronger, Al MacInnis and Michal Handzus also had third-period goals against goalie Curtis Joseph.

Hecht, standing alone in front of the net, banged in Pavol Demitra's behind-the-net pass 18 seconds into the extra session.

Toronto's Tie Domi had three points for the first time in his 13-year career. His six goals are one more than Toronto captain Mats Sundin, who scored for the first time in 13 games.

HURRICANES 2, PANTHERS 1 (OT): Carolina's Bates Battaglia scored on a breakaway with 3:19 left in overtime to lift visiting Carolina.

The Hurricanes, 6-2-0-1 in their past nine, outshot Florida 14-3 in the third and 42-19 overall.

Trevor Kidd stopped Glen Wesley on the doorstep 28 seconds into overtime, but moments later, Sandis Ozolinsh, who assisted on both Hurricanes goals, stole the puck from Ray Whitney and sent Battaglia in alone on Kidd. Battaglia wristed a shot between Kidd's legs for the winner.

FLYERS 4, BLUE JACKETS 3: Mark Recchi scored twice in the third, including the winner with a minute left, for visiting Philadelphia. Recchi didn't see the puck slide past Ron Tugnutt on the winner. He barely got a stick on his shot from the slot, then took a hard tumble with 58.6 seconds left.

RED WINGS 6, THRASHERS 4: Visiting Detroit stunned Atlanta with four second-period goals in 3:57. Shean Donovan had a hat trick for the Thrashers.

FLAMES: Defenseman Derek Morris ended his season-long holdout by signing a new deal, though there was no word on when he will be on the ice. General manager Craig Button would not reveal contract terms.

AVALANCHE 2, COYOTES 1: Martin Skoula scored his first goal of the season with 1:12 left and Joe Sakic added a power-play goal as Colorado extended its home unbeaten streak to eight. The Avs are 17-4-3, the best start in franchise history.

CANADIENS 3, OILERS 2: Brian Savage had a goal and an assist and Martin Rucinsky scored the winner midway through the third, lifting Montreal to the road win.

ISLANDERS: Goalie Rick DiPietro was recalled for the second time. Starter John Vanbiesbrouck has a strained back after colliding with Lightning forward Sheldon Keefe on Monday.

RANGERS: Defenseman Vladimir Malakhov will have reconstructive surgery on his left knee and appears likely to miss the rest of the season. Malakhov missed 54 games last season -- spent with Montreal and New Jersey -- after surgery on his right knee.

SENATORS: Defensemen Sami Salo and Ricard Persson and forward David Oliver should be healthy enough to play Saturday against the Flyers.

WILD: Rookie Marian Gaborik (bruised left leg) is expected to return to the lineup at Phoenix tonight after missing six games.

PECA JOINS TEAM CANADA: Unsigned Sabres center Mike Peca will play for Canada at the Dec. 26-31 Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland. The Sabres reportedly offered a four-year, $10-million offer. Peca is seeking $3.5-million a year.

HOCKEY NIGHT RATINGS NO JOKE: The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said it won't try to bolster fading ratings of its showcase sports property by hiring a comedian to help broadcast games. Still, some critics are lobbying for change. "The show's pretty stoic, and its basic formula hasn't changed over the years, but I think people would definitely tune in to see (Jim) Carrey or (Mike) Myers," said media buyer Eli Paper.
