BRANDON -- One man died and a 19-year-old driver was seriously injured when their car struck a concrete pole on Intersate 75 and split in half Wednesday afternoon.

The two were headed north on an access road that parallels I-75 when the driver lost control underneath the Causeway Boulevard overpass, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The car hit one of five concrete columns that support the overpass, spun around and hit another column, causing the car to break in half, the FHP said.

The passenger, a 20-year-old man, was thrown from the car. He landed in the northbound lanes of I-75 and was struck by a vehicle, the FHP said. He died at the scene.

The driver was taken to Tampa General Hospital.

Their names were not released Wednesday.

Troopers said they think the driver was speeding.

The crash, which happened about 5 p.m., caused rush hour traffic in the northbound lanes of I-75 to come to a standstill for hours.
