These are highlights of the more than $1-billion in the Florida House's proposed cuts to the current year's state budget. The deepest cuts are in education, which accounts for 53 percent of all state spending paid for with general taxes. The House and the Senate have slightly different approaches.
Cut K-12 public school funding by almost $550-million.
Cut the state university system by $113-million.
Cut community colleges by $52.2-million
Cut $224-million total in social services.
Cut $45-million in Medicaid Medically Needy program.
Cut $26-million in Department of Children and Families administration.
Reduce Florida's antitobacco education campaign by $8.9-million.
Eliminate adult vision and hearing services on April 1, 2002.
Delay opening of fifth veterans nursing home, in Charlotte County.
Trim citrus canker tree compensation program by more than $3-million.
Cut drug treatment for prisoners by $7.3-million.
Cut education services for prisoners by $8.1-million.
