Trade talk puts Janney on holdBy TOM JONES © St. Petersburg Times, published January 16, 1999 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Coach and general manager Jacques Demers on Friday delayed putting center Craig Janney on waivers because a trade might be imminent. * * *"We were talking to one team, but now his agent apparently has found another team that may have interest," Demers said. "I am waiting to talk to that team before we do anything." Originally, Demers set a deadline of noon Friday to trade Janney. If Janney was not traded, Demers' plan was to put him on waivers with the intent of sending him to the minors. One deal apparently fell through late Thursday, but Friday morning Janney's agent told Demers another team was interested. "I'm waiting to talk to the general manager, and it may take a day or two," Demers said. "So for now he's not going to be put on waivers. We'll keep things the way they are. We will do whatever is necessary to trade him." By that, Demers means the Lightning is willing to pick up some of Janney's $1.7-million contract. In the meantime, Janney sits home waiting for the Lightning's next move. "We'll do something by early next week, probably no later than Monday or Tuesday," Demers said. "Right now we have to explore all options before we do anything." HAMMER TIME: Former Lightning defenseman Roman Hamrlik is iffy at best for next weekend's All-Star Game at the Ice Palace. Now with Edmonton, Hamrlik was added to the World team after collecting four goals and 16 assists in 37 games. But his status for the game was put in jeopardy last week when he broke his right big toe blocking a slap shot. "Right now it hurts like heck," Hamrlik said. "I can get my foot into a shoe, but a skate is different. I'd love to play. I've still got my house in Tampa Bay." Hamrlik also wouldn't mind some sweet payback by showing up as an All-Star in the city where he once played. AND THE ANSWER IS ... : During New Jersey's television broadcast of Thursday night's game at Ottawa, the trivia question asked was: John MacLean scored the most goals for the Devils during the 1990s. Who is second on the list? Friday morning Lightning forward and former Devil Stephane Richer was asked the same question. "Uh," Richer said, "I think it might be me." He was right. Richer scored 146 goals in five seasons from 1991 to '96. ODDS AND ENDS: Friday's starting time was pushed back 15 minutes so the Devils could honor defenseman Ken Daneyko, who became their all-time games-played leader Dec. 8 when he played his 935th. That allowed him to pass MacLean, who was not mentioned in the ceremony because the Devils remain ticked about MacLean signing with the Rangers as a free agent. ... The Lightning went with the same lineup as in Tuesday's loss to Toronto, with one exception. Because Steve Kelly was demoted to the minors Wednesday, Mikael Andersson played. Forward Brent Peterson and defensemen Mike McBain and David Wilkie were the scratches. Wilkie is about to come back from a groin injury, but don't be surprised to see him sent to minor-league Cleveland for a possibly long conditioning stint.
